I still get an occasional Quark 4 file. A lot of graphic designers are still sitting in 9 because it runs better on older hardware and they're too stupid and stubborn to upgrade. As much as I hate to use it, I usually don't have a choice.

Re: So What will happen to OS9

with apple turning OS9 into a bastard step child i am forced to keep some old computers around running OS9 native. they will probably be used for another decade or so. OS9 is not dead if you use proprietary software that only runs in OS9.

Interesting...  I can see dropping Classic, but apps that require a G4 or G5 processor?  I wonder if that is a limitation of the software and if they plan to work on making it work.

I think we're going into a new era of the Mac platform, with some new and exciting possibilities, but we will not be without growing pains... again.

Personally, I think it would be neat to see dual processors--one PPC, and one Intel.  That would be the best of both worlds.  nod

Or too poor. I use Quark 4 and Photoshop 6 only because I use them so rarely, they're not worth laying out over $1000 to replace both. Got better things to do with my cash buddy. Does that mean OS9 should continue on indefinitely to support a few stragglers, NO! I'm glad I haven't upgraded and will only when it becomes mandatory. I'm far from stupid or stubborn. tongue

Jon, I'm sure Microsoft and/or Bungie will release a fat version of Halo.

Re: So What will happen to OS9

Some people have specialized hardware that doesn't have OSX drivers, or the OSX drivers aren't very good, so the software controlling that hardware has to be in OS9. I work in a lab were we have to use OS9 currently to get certain pieces of equipment to work (an AOTF from http://www.neostech.com/ and a camera from [url]http://usa.hamamatsu.com/[url]the OSX version of the software we use isn't useable).

Software that requires a G4 or G5 will have trouble running on a machine that doesn't have a G4 or G5 processor, hence it not working on an x86-Mac even with Rosetta.  But there arn't that many programs that require a G4 or G5 specifically, and most that do are from major companies that will have native x86 versions ready from the get-go.

I think we're going into a new era of the Mac platform, with some new and exciting possibilities, but we will not be without growing pains... again.

As technology advances, there'll always be growing pains.  Still I imagine this will be less painful than some of the other changes.

It would be neat, but unfeasible from an engineering/economic standpoint.  While it could be done, they wouldn't sell enough machines to make the development costs worthwhile

I don't want to be an a$$hole, but whats the point of booting your g4 into system 7? Just about everything that runs in system 7 can probably be run fine in a 6100 (possibly macked out). Also, I think newer macs can't even boot into os 9, let alone 7. Finally, classic when running old apps on a fast computer doesn't hinder your performance. I used to have to dual boot to run moo 2 on my graphite imac g3 400. On my imac g4 1.25, it runs fine in classic. Finally most apps from the 7 era probably have been updated along the way, if not, then there might be open source freeware. There is no point in utilizing a newer processor to run a system that was designed back when the clock speeds were around 60 mhz.

He was joking...

Anyway, the reason why Rosetta won't run apps that require a G4 or G5 is because they can't emulate the velocity engine. This isn't Apple's code (it was made by Transient, I believe), and it was meant to be more universal, not for specific purposes such as the velocity engine.

What will happen to OS 9?

ANSWER: It will live on in old Macs until the last old Mac gasps it's last breath. By that time everyone will be using Quantum Computational Units with Positronic Matrix's made in China.  wink

P.S. There should also be colonies on the Moon and Mars by then.

Indeed, they already have a Mac OS X port, if I read the source's directory tree right.
They have a Darwin/ppc port, but they don't have a darwin/x86 port yet.
