Games, mostly.
Yeah - a lot of games, even ones with carbon versions, need to be installed via classic.

My computer won't boot into OS 9 anymore or from the OS 9 install CD so I can't play UT!

You can install OS 9 from OS X.
How? To use the installer from the OS 9 CD you need to run classic, which in turn makes installation impossible.

simple: copy the Mac OS 9.1 system folder to your hard drive, Make Classic boot from the copied folder, then double-click the 9.1 installer. Update to 9.2 if desired.
That is, assuming you have a 9.1 install disc.

Apple should consider releasing it as open source and letting the geeks have at it.

Re: So What will happen to OS9
Well, at the risk of adrenalizing a zombie thread, I can finally, honestly, figure out a good reason to keep a Mac OS 9 system running:
Kids' educational games.
I go thrift-shopping a lot, and I always find older educational titles that are cross-platform (Win/Mac, meaning classic Mac OS, of course). Heck, I've picked up 10 such CDs in the past week alone, and my 6-year-old and 3-year-old will still enjoy those titles until they "grow into" the family iMac running Mac OS X.
My daughter has used OS X already, but at her age, as long as she can get around the interface and launch her games, she's good to go.
There's nothing wrong with Mac OS 9 (and earlier) running on the hardware for which it was designed...I mean, it's not like it's going to stop working alla sudden. Well, the hardware might, since it's what, 6 years old or older now? My point is, if you need to run classic applications, it's easy to find a Mac designed for just that purpose, and usually for under $100. If classic is that important to you, the sacrifice of having an inexpensive dedicated Mac for it is the necessary price of admission.
It boggles my mind, though, that some Mac developers haven't even shipped OS X versions of their flagship products yet...but the market should (and will) weed out the companies that fall behind and pave way for newer, more innovative developers. I think any developer still developing for OS 9 should be relegated to hobbyist status, since the platform hasn't been around for quite some time now.
I support a graphic design department (among other Mac clients), and I finally was able to talk them into upgrading their scan workflow from a proprietary Classic application to VueScan for Mac OS X a few months ago. They haven't looked back since.
My question for the holdouts is this: if your livelihood relies on these apps that you "need" classic for, how much is it costing you in lost production NOT to upgrade them to newer, more optimized versions for newer hardware and Mac OS X?

Re: So What will happen to OS9
I didn't jump on the Mac bandwagon until OS X.1. Of course classic still had quite a bit going for it then, since many major apps and recent games were still OS 9 only.
What I remember most about OS 9 is that it looked so dated compared to OS X.

While I agree with you, I don't see it happening - I'm still waiting for the Newton OS to be released...

Re: So What will happen to OS9
Does anyone think that an open source OS9 would beat out Linux? I think having OS9 open-source would be pretty cool. I'd put it on the old family HP immediately (I'm assuming that there would be enough interest in it that people would port it to most platforms).

Re: So What will happen to OS9
It isn't the most portable OS in the world. True, it was done with System 7 (Star Trek), but it wasn't like OS X.
I don't think it would beat out Linux.

Not gonna happen - Inkwell's hand writing recognition on OS X is based on the Newton handwriting recognition IP. So long as Apple doesn't want to give away information about a current product, said NOS won't be going public. I also think that the non-apple developed HWR mode (there are 2 different HWR schemes on NOS 2.x newtons) was licensed from someone else by Apple, so even if they wanted to open source their own IP, I highly doubt they have the right to open source said licensed IP.
OS 9 on the other hand is pretty much all Apple only IP, and legacy IP at that. They could theoretically open source it, but I bet its more likely that once Classic is truly gone from the shipping mac lineup they'll make it free like they did with everything up to OS 7.5.3.
There is some solace in knowing that some things just can't be attained by throwing piles of money at them in the name of corporate greed. --CaptKevMan

Nope.

If it were open source - I suspect some free software projects would borrow from it.
It mostly would be useless though. Without existing apps compiled for x86 OS 9, they would have be written.
Sure - some open source apps could be ported, but why port to a platform that doesn't have proper memory protection and pre-emptive multitasking?

I was about to correct the person who said that Rosetta doesn't emulate AltiVec. Then I realized that at the time the post was made, Rosetta didn't emulate AltiVec. Anyhoo, SheepShaver (as of now) crashes all the damn time, but so far, so good.
