Re: So What will happen to OS9
AAGGHHH!!! Mac OS 9! Let it die already!
Oh, wait...didn't Steve-O hold a funeral for it way back at WWDC 2002? But still, it boggles my mind about the sheer number of people holding onto Classic apps and even those who hoard G5s just so they can run outdated Classic apps after the Intel transition is over. They might as well be hoarding copies of Windows ME...

What's the point in hording copies of Windows ME? Windows XP can run Windows 95/98/ME apps just fine, as well as Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS apps. So it's not really the same thing, is it? Plus ME sucks balls. I agree that in general, it makes more sense to upgrade to native versions of apps, than to buy an "outdated" machine, but some folks don't have a choice. If you need a proprietary app or an app which doesn't have a functional OS X equivelant (there's a lot of educational software in this boat), what do you do then? Do you Duckt-tape a Pismo to the back of your MBP? I know of a few folks in this situation (granted they're a small minority) and fortunately I'm not one of them. I just like to play some classic (note the lack of capitalization) Mac games and use a couple of other Classic apps here and there - nothing much, I suppose. Let's just say I won't be hording a G5 any time soon.
I guess the real question, is how long should Apple continue to enable the use of OS 9 Apps, if 5 years isn't long enough? Is Microsoft's 25 years (and counting) too long? Those are tough questions to answer, but common sense dictates that M$ would be foolish to maintain support for apps that old unless the cost of doing so is at least as insignificant as the flea on an elephant's ass. Apply the flea/ass metaphor to Apple supporting apps that are only 5 years old, and it starts to look like not such a bad idea.

Re: So What will happen to OS9
There's an OS X version of Starcraft. I'm all set.
Sure, I've got a 7500 which will eventually dual-boot X and 9, but that's pretty much only for Unreal and Quake stuff (and a few others).
But, I mean, even COPTER runs on X now. Any software company straglers should just be shot.

They can live (only because I am so merciful). Again, that's why I have a 9-capable computer; for old games. I guess it's the same reason someone would have a PC.
Serious stuff really shouldn't be done in 9 anymore. Especially now with the Intel transition.

Re: So What will happen to OS9
The only real reason OS9 is still on my Pismo is for the old games. And I must admit, I still get a kick out of those old AfterDark screensavers.

Re: So What will happen to OS9
I pretty much timed the whole 9/X thing perfectly for my own needs. I bought the last new Mac that would run 9 natively, in hopes that by the time I needed to upgrade to a newer Mac, I'd be done with 9. And now, three and a half years later, I'd 100% done with 9.
I do pro audio and I know there are a lot of OS 9 rigs out there still. Those are guys who have no interest in upgrading because they don't use their Macs as computers so much as they use them as audio equipment.
It'll be a long time before 9 is ever really "gone" - but I'm glad I'm not still using it!

Classic?? People actually still use that?
I think 5 years is enough time to say good bye.

DOOMLegacy? Who the smurf uses that?
THIS is where it's at. It actually works and isn't buggy as all hell. And it looks a LOT nicer.

DoomLegacy is old and busted.
DoomsDay is new hotness.
