MacAddict forums chat
For those interested, we have an unofficial IRC channel for those forumites wishing to chat with their brethren. The channel is #mafirc on the server irc.freenode.net
If you're new to IRC, there is a simple chat app that will let you connect to our chat channel, all you have to do is enter a nickname. Click here to download. Also, the contact email addresses in this app are out of date, if you have a problem with it post in here.
Also, you may want to check out some information on IRC to learn what it's all about, including beginners info, and to download clients, visit IRCHelp.org.
A couple of good irc clients include XChat and Colloquy, but there are plenty more available. I would recommend Colloquy for the beginning user, it's also what I use because I think it's pretty.
If you do pop in for the first time and there's no activity, stick around for a bit. The conversation comes in fits & spurts, so if you leave it open while you go do something else someone will probably start talking at some point.
I'm leaving this thread open in case anyone needs further help or has any comments to add.

Re: MacAddict forums chat
It was out of date, and sometimes it's easier to follow these things when starting anew, I think.

I was kinda thinking that was the case, and that other thread was just going off in different directions. Maybe this thread shouldn't be an open thread, but just a sticky that lets people know about chat and the clients, and possibly the rules of etiquette for that specific channel. This is a little out of date but the rules still apply. The Rules.

Re: MacAddict forums chat
I prefer to leave it open for localised help for people having trouble getting into the channel, especially anyone who's new to irc. It's surprising how many web users have never used it before.

That's true, but if the thread gets out of hand like the last one, it could possibly be a deterrent. People see multi page threads and don't want to have to read it all if they haven't been keeping up.

Re: MacAddict forums chat
Freenode's guidelines encourage ops to not be opped, or "red," unless they are doing something that needs op privs. If you really want to know who the ops are you can type this:
/msg chanserv access #MAFirc list

Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it's right. Just because something is illegal, doesn't mean it's wrong.

I’m not ready to make nice-I’m not ready to back down-I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round-It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could-‘Cause I’m mad as hell-Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Phydeaux gets stolen from me quite frequently.
Spirit was crushed; now is fading, But I want to help make things right.
Because I can see and I can feel, and you can see and you can feel
So why don't we both either stand up and fight
Or at least together we'll call it a night.

If you are conserned about your nick, and come in often you can register it so no one else can use it. "/msg nickserv help register" should get you all the info you need to set it up

Re: MacAddict forums chat
I think I registered my nick long time ago (maybe 2 yrs ago) — it asked me to enter a password and I did. I don't remember if I requested to register. And now when I connect to freenode (if it gets through), it'll my for my password. Of course, I forgot. What to do?
1. Instill fear.
2. ???????? (use your imagination)
3. Profit!
