2 things I DON'T want to see in Intel Macs

1. Integrated intel graphics

2. Celeron processors

Hopefully Apple will have the sense to leave this kind of rubbish for the Dells and eMachines of the world.

Re: 2 things I DON'T want to see in Intel Macs

eh, yeah, although integrated graphics in a mac mini wouldn't be the end of the world. Celeron I definatly don't want to see, and I don't thikn we will - but thats just me hoping again.

I for one am extrememly excited, because my next mac will be a powerbook or iBook for college in a little over a year - right when we'll be seeing the Pentium M Mac laptops! Until then, my 1.25ghz loaded G4 tower is gonna have to do me.

Re: 2 things I DON'T want to see in Intel Macs

So many friends of mine...and coworkers (in the PC department at circuit city) want a mac now....honestly...it IS the best of both worlds. Scared little PC users can now switch, and run back to windows for 1 hour a day if they need to use mIRC or somthing...and gradually pick up the mac platform.

The practice Mac has integrated graphics and it supports Quartz Extreme.  It won't be the death of Apple in iBooks, eMacs, and Mac minis (they are the cheaper Macs and can probably use integrated graphics to the advantage price wise).

That is the practice Mac though and the final product could be better than practice.

It isn't even practice, it is just a dev box (like how G5s are the dev boxes for xbox 360 oddly enough).

But what is a development box if it isn't practice for the real Mactel?

What do you mean by practice? Is the G5 practice for the xbox 360?

So does this mean that everytime we see a Mac ad on tv, we'll also hear the "Intel Inside" chime?

ick.

This is the practice box.  The practice box runs OS X on an Intel processor, just to see how well it works.  Will this be the final product we see on the shelves?  Not likely.  This is something that Apple will refine.

The reason why the development Macintel has integrated graphics is mostly because the drivers for video cards are kind of lacking right now...

Yes, dev boxes rarely do become final products because they are made to help developers.

ick indeed - make that 3 things I don't want.

An intel inside sticker would make 4.

What's wrong with the Celeron?

If Apple had mobile G4 or G5 chips performing as well as the current Celeron M, we wouldn't even be talking about a switch to Intel in the first place.

But then the basic ground rule will have to be exactly the same as the shipping MacTel version, otherwies whatever program developer come up with from the kit will be useless and this exerciswe will be a total waste of time!

I doubt it. Unless Apple decides that OSX for Intel will be built around Windows 95/98 technology and the new motherboards will be using ISA expansion cards.

Re: 2 things I DON'T want to see in Intel Macs

If a Celeron M in a MacMini means it could be $100 cheaper, that's good.

If integrated graphics means you can save even more money and choose your own graphics card later, that's good.

The possibility exists that Mac users will no longer be limited to 2 or 3 chip choices and 2 or 3 graphics choices.  GOOD.

Hi, welcome to 1994.

It is possible to to get your head out of your ass.  Try reading about computers instead of using apple fanboy sites as your source for tech information.

QFE.

I really hope integrated graphics don't get incorporated into iBooks. My iBook has a 9200 for a reason...it puts it ahead of the competition. Even though a 9200 isn't much these days...Intel IGP is far, far less.

Maybe the reason why when he demoed Dashboard, the widgets were already on the dashboard...so as to not show the absence of the familiar ripple effect that might cause a little suspicion in the crowd for the announcement later.
(My god that was a runon sentence...haha)

I suggest watching the Keynote again. I distinctly remember Steve opening a few widgets after he activated Dashboard and the ripple effect happened with each new widget he added.

...Yep, you're right. I stand corrected. -_-

Perhaps he's using another video card? Hmm...

Re: 2 things I DON'T want to see in Intel Macs

The ripple effect only requires support of certain OpenGL shaders. Older video cards don't support those shaders, so they can't use it, but newer ones can. That has no bearing as to the speed of the card, though. Just because Intel's integrated graphics support the shaders doesn't mean that it's fast.
