Have you thought about THIS? Intel Macs = easy and cheap to upgrade.

One benefit to Intel Macs is something that is virtually impossible with current Macs- upgrading the CPU will be cheap AND easy.  Even Apple resellers and tech support companies have a very difficult time getting Mac parts.  Soon you'll be able to go to a site like newegg.com and pick your own CPU and put it in yourself.  Apple may use proprietary mainboards- in fact I am expecting it- but a CPU is a CPU and they won't be able to prevent anyone from buying one from a cheap online dealer.

Currently, a 2.8 GHz dual-core Pentium D is only about $240.  That's a lot cheaper than a single G4 1.2 GHz upgrade card.

Wrong

I wish it is Right.

But if history repeat itself, Apple will have the cpu not on mb, but a sub board with multipler lock with no easy method of cpu swap unless you replace/exchange the whole broad! it can be done and often(owc/newegg site), but at a price double/triple of waht the oem cpu might otherwise cost!

Apple can keep the upgrade routes for the Power Macs and maybe PowerBooks and iMacs.  The others can use more of a boost from replaceable graphics cards.

The further Apple strays from standard MoBo/CPU design the greater the impetuous for hackers to get OSX to run on generic hardware.
So one way or another we will have our cheap upgrades.

Screw the EULA, full speed ahead!

Re: Have you thought about THIS? Intel Macs = easy and cheap to upgrade.

Are the BIOS stored on the CPU or the motherboard? If it's on the CPU, it might cause some problems. Even if it isn't, Apple will probably prevent people from upgrading their CPU. Maybe not, but they currently don't make it too easy even though it shouldn't be that much different with the current processors...

Filter dodging is likely to get you in trouble with the mods. Hardly bannable this time, but I can't guarantee that it won't be if you continue. shrug

All I'm hoping for with a Macintel is being able to use the wide variety of video cards, and not having to use Mac Edition overpriced crap because ATI and Nvidia can charge whatever they want for them.

Re: Have you thought about THIS? Intel Macs = easy and cheap to upgrade.

Well, the developer transition kits I know are running just what looks like a standard Intel motherboard with integrated graphics, and a Phoenix BIOS. It might change with the whole Intel DRM thing, who knows.

I've also heard that yes, it's compatible with any PC graphics card, the only issue is drivers. ATI is already at work with OS X/Intel drivers for their cards, but no word on NVidia yet.

I hope that's true when the x86 Macs come out...if it were, I'd just grab a mid-range PowerMac and keep the crap video card, and stick my 6800 into it. Saves money.

Re: Have you thought about THIS? Intel Macs = easy and cheap to upgrade.

DRM ain't ganna mean a thing to anyone cept those who use the chips... I'm quite sure It'll be able to be emulated easily on a amd, and BIOS should never be a problem... look at cherry OS and wine...

The BIOS/Open Firmware is a product of the motherboard.  Any PC you take and switch processors on will use the same BIOS.

I predict "software activation" for Leopard.....

If Adobe is doing it, Apple might as well.

Really. Cause I thought it was an chip that stored non-volitile memory...

P.S. Adobe's software activation has been cracked for years... even on mac...

And all of the compatibility headaches to go along with them?  I don't think you're going to get the MacOS/PowerPC user experience if you are trying to make a "cracked" version of MacOS X run on some cheap PC clone whose parts don't have any official MacOS X drivers.

Considering it will all be x86... emulation should be easy and painless with minimal overhead... Have you seen MoL? Did you know it can be run on non mac ppc hardware with the same performance as on an apple machine.... And please don't call any x86 hardware non-cheep as you insinuated in your argument as it's all the same smurf...

Emulation of what?  Emulation of the video hardware that Mac OS X supports, using different video hardware?

Hmmm...I notice that Microsoft's Virtual PC emulates an x86 CPU but does not attempt to emulate accelerated video cards.  As far as I know, it doesn't support accelerated video even when the video card on the Mac has the same chip set as the video card one might wish to emulate on the PC.

That's what he's talking about. Compare this to this. Notice that the mac version is a CPU soldered onto another circuit board - this is because Apple is a bunch of blue meanies when it comes to upgrading your macs.
