Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
Fortune reports that Michael Dell is interested in licensing Apple's Mac OS X. "If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers," Dell wrote in an email. It's the first time any PC industry executive has openly shown enthusiasm for selling machines with Apple's software. Though that's all Dell would say for the record, I suspect his interest is not unknown to Jobs. So, as I said in this column last week (and in an article in the new issue of FORTUNE), the ball is in Jobs' court."

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
I wouldn't doubt it, Dell has been toying with Linux and they probably see OS X as a little more idiot friendly. Still, I think Dell would run OS X into the ground.

They'd get pissed when they realize they can't load the machines up with a lot of worthless programs.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
It sounds to me more like Dell's idea would be to make Apple more like Microsoft.
Is this going to be one of those Macolyte "Never! Never! Never!" deals, where the insular Mac user community's notion of special exclusivity runs head up against Apple's business goals?

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
Since Apple has gone Intel. Anything is possible.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does license its OS. Possibly to HP or Dell. But rest assured Apple would make sure not to hurt itself in the process. .

The problem I see is that Dell is looking to make a Microsoft that they can control.

Aren't most industries looking to do the same ? Once they see a cash cow like MS they all want their own... but without the poop it generates...

Yup, just because everyone wants it doesn't mean Apple should blindly go into it though.

Dell could barely handle selling Apple's iPods, somehow I don't think they could handle selling OS X.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
I also think that Apple would control what hardware went into a third-party computer (a.k.a. clone) to make it stable. Sure you could get a Trident video card, but where are the Mac OS X drivers? They don't exist? Well, we'll make cheap drivers and no one will know the difference.
Somehow I think Apple would stop that from happening. If apple made it so that you could buy clones, they would control the prices, as well. Don't want something that looks better costing more.
Get out of my mind, idea! I already have anonther idea in my head that I am working on!

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
I don't see any pressing need for Apple to license OSX to other vendors. But that assumes Apple wants to continue in the desktop/workstation market with the Powermacs. I think the move to x86 gives the Powermac a new lease on life, let alone the laptop and budget market. So licensing OSX to Dell and others might subvert the advantage the move to x86 brings.
On the other hand, an Apple that concentrates on the mini, iMac and laptop market while licensing out to other manufacturers for the high end desktop workstation and server market could probably be made to work. I could see Dell or Polywell selling high end single and multi-processor x86 Macs in such a way that doesn't cut into Apple's core consumer product lines (where the money is).
I'd certainly never say never.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
There's another consideration that plays to the marketing of the powermac line of products, and I bet this issue could replace the fanboy argument over PPC vs x86.
The issue will be how well OSX and OSX applications run on the x86. Given all the advantages of fast CPU, fast bus speeds, advances in ram etc, will OSX take as good advantage of the hardware as Windows? On identical hardware, which is the speed king? This is far less of an issue for the consumer mini, imac and laptop market than it is for the desktop workstation. If (heaven forbid) OSX turns out to be a bit of a laggard in that respect (and the compilers etc have been optimised leaving no room for excuse-making), then does Apple really want to bother with the desktop workstation market?
Is OpenGL performance on say, the Radeon line of GPUs (identical hardware), a precursor to more general OS architectural performance in a one-to-one comparison?
