That is my point. I doubt that suddenly Apple and Dell would get together and have a good enough relationship to pull anything off. Once Dell saw yet another opportunity they would probably just dump Apple and run off with that.
Don't forget the HP ipod! what a joke that was!
Pay the exact same price as Apple iPod but without the cult/status smybol of Apple logo!
You mean the same way as Apple jump ship from Motorola/IBM to Intel?
This is business, profit margin and market share is the "ONLY" thing that count, if you think otherwise you are just a fanboy dreaming out loud!
Okay, so can you explain how what I said was not related to profit margin and market share? Oh wait, I see, you were declaring to the world that you were a "fanboy" because your post didn't actually say anything. It's okay, pcguy, you don't have to label yourself like that.
We all know why Dell would like OS X. That isn't the issue. We don't know why Apple should like to sell OS X to Dell. Given past business relationships between the two companies, I find any successful relationship extremely improbable unless something drastically changes in the way the companies deal with each other.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
My post was related to your post(tone of voice) who seem to indicated and surprise that "ONLY" Dell will do a such thing as jump ship when there is a better "deal" to be had somewhere else!
"Once Dell saw yet another opportunity they would probably just dump Apple and run off with that."

Yes, you would have gotten that impression if I had written, "Dell would be the only company that if they saw yet another opportunity they would probably just dump Apple and run off with that." I find that if I am going to be jumping to conclusions, name-calling is not a wise thing to do. Wouldn't you agree?

If any PC copmany will produce Mactels, it will be HP. They already have the agreement to sell iPods.

Apple has certainly had its share of road apples - quality control my arse.
Apple now uses commodity parts like everyone else - hard drives, cd/dvd drives, video cards, power supplies, etc. They just charge a hell of a lot more.
The only thing that is genuine apple these days are the motherboard and the case design. Everything else is commodity parts.
btw - Dell has one of the best quality control records in the x86 industry.
...A point that many MAF'ers seem to miss. The fact is that once Apple goes x86, there is little to no hardware differentiation between any PC manufacturer. It might be worth noting that just because a hardware manufacturer installs a Microsoft OS on their machines doesn't mean they are "in love" with that OS or are secretly working to further Microsoft domination. Could it be that Dell is tired of Microsoft's terrible licensing schemes and support policies? How much money does Dell spend troubleshooting virus and spyware infestations on new machines that Microsoft should be taking care of since they are a function of the OS and not hardware? You think maybe Microsoft has ever bullied Dell? Could they actually be interested in selling machines with a better OS and less restrictive licensing?
You know, allowing Mac OS to run on other hardware doesn't mean that it will be bargain basement trash. Why couldn't Apple certify certain standard configurations and allow the OS to be installed only on those machines that meet their predetermined hardware spec? Maybe Apple could create a simpler and more mutually beneficial licensing agreement for OS X that hardware manufacturers could really be happy with? If Apple just took responsibility for OS support off of hardware makers most of them would be thrilled with any licensing fee. Try not to apply the current business model as though it were incapable of changing to meet new needs. If any company has shown the moxie to pull off these kinds of changes, it is Apple.

Intresting enough somebody at PBS feels the same.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
An interesting read, but a bit farther out there than I am willing to go. I just can't see Apple being sold to Intel, nor can I see Mac OS supplanting Windows...it would be nice, but Windows is too entrenched. With proper backing from Intel, however, Apple could put a pretty good dent in the consumer market...but that's a pretty big "could".

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks it's funny that Dell is interested... I think Apple might catch more eyes if they wave OS X over Dell's head like a twinke over Peter Griffin. Who knows, let's just hope no one gets a pirated version of X out on windoze machines.

Re: Dell interested in licensing Mac OS X
an application to work around "You can't run OS X on this machine" will happen. It's a given. Look what happened when OS X premiered and XPostFacto came out...
