Hooray!  He's taking charge of the situation. up Healthy working adults living in your home, be they grown children or parents, are supposed to pay their own way.

Man, today has been hellish.  I managed to lose the check she gave me!  I called her since it disappeared in a busy movie theater and she's being a total bitch about writing another one even though I offered to pay the fee to stop payment on the original.  Then she called me and reamed me over it.  Nanny MAD!

You sure it was you that lost it, and it didn't instead "walk away"?

If I hadn't been at a movie theater when it happened...I'd wonder for sure.  Why on earth does it not make sense to just stop payment on the check instead of making me feel like smurf?

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

Now she has come home and is trying to counsel ME on money issues.  Yeah, yeah...we're a little short right now.  That's doing nothing but adding to my stress.  Let's go over why this is ludicrous, mom.

1) We own our home, you are living with your CHILDREN
2) We have both had steady jobs for YEARS, you have yet to keep one five months

My mom gave me a nice birthday check and I'm tempted to use it to put our finances right.  I'll feel more depressed if I do.  Short of tearing my hair out, what's your sage advice on the birthday $$$?

now THAT'S great advise
I would feel better with my debt load reduced or vanished than I would about anything else.
you are buying a house... lose the debt wherever it is. credit cards.. lose em..
I have a mortgage.. i have recurring monthly bills for phone, power, etc.. but 30 days after I paid off my credit cards at the unreal interest rates that i had, i had more money then i ever thought I would.
pay off as much as you can starting with the smallest and working up to get rid of as many creditors as possible.
then shove the cards in the back closet. stay off them for 6 months.. then when you use em.. pay them off in 30 days.
if you can pay everyone off except the mortgage, so much the better.
it's the best gift to give yourself and you WILL feel better about yourself and your finances.

dam.. outa debt and outa MIL.. be a good thing dearie. real good.

Well, I don't know if $200 is going to be a miracle; our house is paid for and we don't have any credit cards, but you're probably right nonetheless.

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

Okay, people felt so passionately about this so I felt the need to update.  It hasn't sunk in yet after four months of pure hell but-after a loud argument between MIL and husband which I mostly slept through-the crazy lady moved to some hole in the wall downtown.  She took some of our stuff with her but I could care less.  I awoke this morning and she was GONE!  I'm sure she's going to try and coerce us into moving her crap in this weekend but it's 98 degrees.  Good luck with that, lady!

SHE'S GONE!

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

now that's what I call waking up on the RIGHT side of the bed.
as far as her crap she left...
have an exchange policy in force when she want's it.
ya, you said you didn't care, but it's worth a shot..
and if you do help her, I wouldn't help her crap any farther than the front yard. preferably about the same place where the trash is put out.

enjoy the freedom... now you can truly clean house and get it smelling like YOUR home again.

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

You know, it's funny-as I read your reply she called with a sob story about her car finally giving up the ghost (followed by a long pause as she waited for me to offer her one of ours) and how all of her work clothes were here etc etc etc could we bring them blah blah blah. I'm going to get stuck moving her smurf furniture and boxes all day tomorrow, aren't I?  I have a home to get ready to sell and rest to catch up on.  Still, even if that's how it plays out she and her oil spewing car won't darken our doorstep again.  I plan on packing every bit of her crap up so there's no excuse for her to bother us further.

This too will pass, Nanny. Don't let her inn your life even if she or her stuff is in your physical space.

dunno if you have one in your local.. but perhaps one of those little moving companies may help. we have one called "Three Guys with a truck". all they do is small apt. moving or furniture pickups that can be done in one or two trips at the most.
and their rates are very reasonable for the apartment hopping crowd.
might be worth it to just be done with it by paying once for a fast haul of her stuff and you don't even have to look at her. coupla hundred bucks and she is outa there. cost of moving it that way vs your mental well being and satisfaction of not having to manually do it yourself is way in your mental favor outweighing the fiscal cost.
no arguments.. she isn't in your house, cause she will either show up or try to bum a ride back to your home while you are making trips back and forth to "help" heh.. NOT.
get her crap piled, get a little company to come pick it up and haul it. best "Unit Satisfaction" return you will ever get on your money.

Good news nanny!  I lust REALLY hope that she stays away this time.  Most people have enough to worry about and raising a parent doesn't help matters much.

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

She called about five times Sunday morning asking for "just" her work clothes and laundry detergent.  I told my husband "smurf it, let's see how much the Prius can hold." We crammed every last bit of her crap and drove down there in a hurry, much to her suprise.  Spent two hours gutting the room, trying to get the smell out.  I feel so much lighter on my feet this morning, plus we found a kickass neighborhood and house which will be ready in winter. I think we're going to buy it. big_smile

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

That's a pretty nice floor plan.  The master bedroom is quite large, which is nice.  I really don't get why they put Great Rooms in houses, but then again I am used to a separate living room and a parlor because that is what they did back when our house was built.  One HUGE room seems like a waste to me, but if you entertain, then it could come in handy.

Glad to hear things are getting better for you!  Good luck!  cheers

Well, it works for us because we have this bedroom sized living room right now and were foolish enough to buy this really cool but really large couch/loveseat/coffee table set which makes it hard to move around.  That coupled with the TV we plan to buy will make things quite lovely size wise.  Plus no smelly old lady furniture.

Re: Mother in Law: Part Deux: Embrace the horror this summer!

Damn straight.  I still can't quite believe that she's gone.  However-

She came back and took some of our deck chairs!  Granted, they're Walmart plastic, but why? Supposedly, she "forgot" a few things.  I know better. She has our very expensive CD alarm clock (borrowed) and some pots & pans.  It's definitely a small price to pay for her absence but the locks will be getting changed today regardless.
