Re: Freshman Survival Guide

Sweet deal. I'm going to Virginia Tech so I'll probably spend most of the Fall semester at football games. Is there anyone who went to a school with a nationally recognized sports program that regrets it because it seemed like that was all anyone cared about?

1. don't have sexual fantasies about your neighbor.
2. don't hook up with your neighbor.
3. don't say no when someone of the same gender is going to kiss you.
4. if you are naked, don't hug people.
5. keep your smurfing mouth shut in class. No one likes hearing smurf from stupid freshmen.

Wow.
We had one in the Media Communications Department that will not leave until she has finished all SIX areas of emphasis...  I don't even know what all six areas of emphasis are!!  Needless to say, I saw a picture of her in the college catalog from 2000-2001, so she's pushing 5-6 years...

July 1st is Big East day down at UC! I would bet that this year everyone will care a little more about sports down there (they did care, but when you regularly play teams like ECU, it gets boring), but nothing like a Virginia Tech, Miami FL, Auburn, Ole Miss, etc.

I go to Texas A&M. We used to be good. Now we suck. When Reggie McNeal graduates we will suck even more.

Of course, I'm not a big football person. I don't really understand or even know how the sport works. My ex-boyfriend had to explain everything to me, repeatedly. But I went to every home game - not for the football but for the atmosphere and the fun. There is nothing like overtime games with 81,000 fans yelling and screaming and being rowdy aggies. It's great stuff.

It kind of sucks that all anyone cares about in Texas is football. All the fine arts get the shaft and generally they are the first programs to be cut. And it seems like only the atheletes get any reasonable scholarships.

But there really isn't anything I can do about it, so I'm just going to have a hell of a good time while I'm here tongue

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

I'm actually kinda stoked that my school will have sports teams, if for no other reason than that I never went to conventional (read: more than one person per class) high school. Hopefully academics will come first and foremost, though.

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

My high school was a big basketball school (first team to repeat as state champs since 1972, like I care). I'm a HUGE football fan and I can't wait. I literally chose Va Tech over a few other schools because of the football.

I saw how the basketball players at my high school were given special treatment and I was wondering if any of you experienced that in college and felt that it undermined the university.

I can't wait for college. Move-in day is August 19th!

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

Getting in, yes, and undergrad too (because it was an accomplishment).  But I never got excited about the process of moving away.  Hence, I think it's interesting to see all these people excited about college.  I just never really felt that way. smile  It's not meant to be condensating.

If it's Brown, flush it down.

Anyways, leave your dorm room door open whenever you're in the room for the first few weeks and beyond. You will meet people. People won't go, whoa who lives in there? Just do it, you will be happy because of it.

Funniest thing I've heard all day.

This board is filled with engineering, science and some art-related majors. Is there anyone who majored in business? My intended majors are Finance and Accounting, I'd like to know how that turns out.

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

Well Tria, I'm scared silly about college, but quite excited as well. Is nice that campus is only a 4 hour drive or so from our house, though, so a weekend trip after a nasty test is no biggie.

I guess having no parental imposed rules makes many quite happy, though...

You'll have more freetime, I promise you that.  And steep competition when you graduate. wink

You'd have a different view if you attended a Texas school that had a larger vested interest in the arts like Texas Tech or Univ. of Houston.  Top Music/Art programs at both, with money to go around.

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

Competition? I know. I'm already planning ahead for B-school to possibly acquire a Masters of Accounting and maybe even take the CPA exam. If I end up going that route it seems so far away.

It's funny how my parents graduated from high school not even thinking about college, but I'm graduating thinking about another 5 or 6 years of school.

Re: Freshman Survival Guide

Yeah, that's important to think about, though, especially if you want to continue in school.  Maybe not as important for you as for somebody wants to go to Harvard Med in 4 years but still important. smile

Knowing that you want to get an advanced degree gives you something more to work for.  This can be a good or a bad thing: good if it motivates, but bad if it causes you to lose sight of all the awesome opportunities available in the here and now.

True, but A&M has the vet school. And despite what they say, you know they are biased. Aggies get into the aggie vet school and anybody else better be really really good otherwise...

Heh, too bad I don't want to  be a vet anymore, lol. But at the time I did. But I love it here, so I don't really care.

College is what you make of it I think. Even if it isn't your first choice school you can still grow to love the place and succeed if you have the right attitude and an open mind. big_smile
