Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

Ok, I was reviewing the statistics on the Xbox 360, which I have done many times, but this time something occured to me. We all know that Xbox 360 uses Power PC proccesors. Since OS X Tiger runs on the PowerPC now, does that mean that the Xbox 360 could potentially me modded to run Tiger. Think about it! Considering the 360 uses three 3.2Ghz Power Pc processors,  has 512 ram, a custom built grahpics card, and a 40GB harddrive, the thing with Tiger on it would be amazing. If the 360 can be modded to run Tiger.... I would do it in a second. The Xbox 360 is astimated to be around$500, which is a great price for computer that powerful.

So do you think it could be done?

Re: Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

from what you're saying, the current X-Box should be able to run Linux, yet... if I'm not mistaken... no one has found a way around the protection Microsoft has put on it. I figure there will be something similar on the X-Box 360.

Yeah, it would be awsome. Three 3.2Ghz Power Pc Processors! Imagine what you could do. I hope that it will be a possibility.

Re: Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

Yea there are tons of people who run Linux on their XBoxes, one person who modded his XBox to play any type of game, including PS2, Dreamcast, Sega CD, etc, and not too long ago there were valid articles and tutorials floating around the net on how to install OSX on a Xbox (via PearPC)

It'd be interesting to see what MS does to try and stop hacks this time, if they try at all.

Sweet thanks for the help. Does that mean Tiger will work?

Re: Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

Theoretically, it can.  The method used the most in getting OSX and Linux, other Dashboards, etc installed was that in MechWarrior (i think) and maybe one other game, the method the game used to save files allowed the underpinnings of the XBox system to be exploited if the disk was switched out during the process.  It will only be a matter of time before a game screws up like Mechwarrior did, or hackers find a way into the system through hardware or software.  Most likely, you will have to install a mod chip to be able to do anything significant.  I wouldn't be surprised if MS used a Mac-esque proprietary mobo, either, to prevent things like USB, FW, and other peripherals to be added (another common mod)

Of course, I condone none of this, neither does MS, and of course MAF doesn't either.  Also, don't use this forum as a sole source for info.   Regardless, no solid details about this will be known until people actually have the 360 in their hands, and not much more than that will be known before said 360 is in pieces all over the kitchen table.

Re: Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

There is no bloodly reason to put an OS other than the one it comes with on a freaking XBox. And to make things worse, you're speculating about putting it on a XBox that doesnt exist yet, doesnt have a concrete feautre set, and wont be readily availible for months. Not to mention how you seem to not realize that when using about 3 levels of emulation the Xbox was recognised as a 66mhz G3 by OSX. Yeah, thats down from a 733mhz Pentium.

Also not to mention that the CPUs in the comming generation are ALL specialty taylor made chip sets that are designed to run games and push graphics, not general purpose retail CPUs that are intended to run a host of different kind of tasks a retail OS would throw at it.

So to actually answer your question. Yes. I'm sure given enough time, someone will make it happen, and will post a tutorial on the internet. But will it prove useful for anything but 'hax0r cred'? Not one damn bit. Will you be the one to figure it out? Not one tiny snowballs chance in hell on an unusually hot day. I'm going to go as far as saying that I am suprimely confident that odds are, if you even attempt to follow said tutorial sometime in the future, you'll ruin your system and have to buy a new one before you get it working.

Plus, isn't it a single three core PPC chip?  Probably on a single FSB, w/a fixed amount of RAM that is designed to be shared between the system and GPU?   The GPU itself only has 10MB of VRAM, it couldn't even run quartz extreme!

Re: Xbox 360 and OS X Tiger

The architecture is still quite a bit different from the G5. Also, it wouldn't have the open firmware, so it won't be able to boot from OS X. The closest you might be able to get is, if the chip architecture is close enough, run a version of PPC linux and then run OS X through Mac on Linux.
