So I registered a domain, and got an e-mail confirming it. But it says I have to wait before the domain registers, or something. How long is this wait, generally? An evening? A day? A billion years?

Depends on the DNS, Internet weather, ect.... But, usually it starts in around 24-48 hours and can take another couple of days to propagate. I have had them take up to a week and some practically overnight.
