Where on earth can I download X11.app?

I downloaded GIMP. The problem is that I need X11. I downloaded it, but it was all this weird crap (and by crap I mean folders). I don't understand how on earth to fix it or anything. How in the world can I aquire X11.app, and not the open-source gibberish. It's becoming a female dog to figure out, if you know what I'm saying.confused

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

You get X11.app by installing it when you install the rest of your operating system.

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

I couldn't find it with the software that came with my mac mini.  I had to go to the older version of Panther I had bought previously to find it, so I wonder if they stopped packaging it.

Anyway, heres the Apple page:

I didn't know it was available as a separate download; and I needed to head out the door.
They also sounded a bit n00b-ish, so I though a quick reply would suffice.

By the way, don't use the official GIMP on OS X. Use the Mac version. It still needs X11, but at least it's a simple double-clickable application.

True, n00bs believe anything, just like in halo when I tell them that the overshield makes you invincible and they shoot at me in my Warthog and I run them over. Good Times.

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

I'd point out that the posted download link is for X11 ver. 1.0, which is fine for Panther.  If you are using Tiger, you need X11 ver. 1.1 (and it's updated SDK, at least for many X-apps), which are not available for download.  They are however, on the Tiger DVD and can be installed at any time just by running their package installers.

I know this has nothing to do with your question, but have you looked at Seashore? Great app like GIMP, but no X11

The X11.app may be installed, but Wine may need the header files and things that are installed with the SDK (Software Development Kit).  Go to your Tiger DVD and when it mounts/opens in Finder, slide down to "Optional Installs.mpkg" and double click it.  Once you get to the "Custom Install on "Macintosh HD"" screen, select "Applications" and in that "X11".  That will make sure that you have the appropriate X11.app installed.

Then go back to the install DVD, go into Xcode Tools and double click "XcodeTools.mpkg" and do a COMPLETE install of Xcode Tools, including all of the SDK's (including X11).

You'll probably not need to use any of the tools yourself, but many of the pre-compiled apps will need some of the files included in the SDK's in order to run properly.

I put X11.app in my "Login Items" for my account so that it is up and running and ready for any X11 app that needs it (OpenOffice, GIMP, etc. etc.) whenever I'm logged in.  It has a very small footprint on the system until it's needed and even then it isn't huge.

If you want to get into open source software check out Fink.  Their FinkCommander makes life very easy.

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

You see i did that i installed it, from my osx 10.0 disc. Surely that x11 must be outdated?
when i try to install the downloaded version of x11 it says the same thing, about the newer version. darwine is still asking for x11.app.

is there any way that i can bypass the software check when i open the x11user.pkg?

very desperate, i'm fearing a dull life filled with VPC!!!!

Ah HA!  (Read about this in another thread or forum!)

The software check.

Have a look in /Library/Receipts for ".pkg" files to do with X11 and move same to temporary storage and retry your install.

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

Ah....

Here's a question from out of the blue.

Your system is telling you that your already have X11 installed (in Tiger it's in the /Applications/Utilities folder).  Do you have X11 running when you try to start darwine?
That may be what darwine is saying, not that it can find X11, but that it can't find a running copy of X11.
'Cause X11 shouldn't be this hard!

I've done nothing but upgrade-in-place (no archive and install, no install from scratch) from Jaguar -> Panther -> Tiger and have never had this kind of hiccup.

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

Hhmmmm.....

I'm no expert, but having come across an error message, or 6, in the last 20 years, I'd say, off-hand, that that is all tied up in the original error that Wine couldn't find the FreeType font library it wanted.  It's a domino effect kind of thing.  One thing flops then another can't get what it wants and falls over, and some other thread can't get what it wants, etc. etc. until the whole thing just dies.  "For the want of a nail...."

Now, if a person were a super-duper, programmer/sys-admin kind of person, they'd take one look at that entire error log and say; "Oh!  Hang on a sec." and bounce a couple of files around and pat the computer on the monitor and tell it it's "a good little computer" and all would be well.

Me?  I'm confused and prone to wandering! confused

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

Can you launch darwine from within the X11 terminal? I've found in many cases that I get similiar errors (x server not found/not running) when I launched certain programs using the built in Terminal application. Just a guess.

One other stupid question. The program you're trying to run with darwine, has it been compiled for use on wine?

Re: Where on earth can I download X11.app?

Darwine is pre-Alpha software.  unfortunately, it doesn't include the freetype library with the distribution yet. The only true use you would have is if you had an Intel mac and/or you are a developer.  Just telling you.

And I say Launch X11 before launching darwine.
