put password on netgear wireless router now airport won't connect
I recently installed a linksys wireless router. I ran for a short time without wep enabled and was able to acess with both a toshiba xp machine and ibook running panther.
added wep to the router
toshiba accesses fine ( so i know i have the correct password)
ibook tells me i don't have the correct password when i try to connect ..
it sees the network fine and the signal strength is fine
am I missing an obvious or easy fix ?

Try entering the password with "password" on left only. Don't select 128-bit hex or ASCII.

Re: put password on netgear wireless router now airport won't connect
if the password solution still hasn't worked, what i've always had problems with is using the passphrase/passwords on mac, but trying the hex number has always worked for me for airport extreme, not sure about regular airport, but i've set up two different houses with linksys wireless routers (with windows xp machines wired) and both wouldn't accept the password, just change the pulldown to hex and locate the hex number by logging into the router (http://192.168.1.1) it should have a wireless wep password button or section, usually you can generate the hex number by using the password, so enter the password that worked on the toshiba generate the hex and then input it onto the ibook. hope it works.

Are you putting a $ before the WEP password? In other words, if the WEP pass is "FFFFFFFFFF" then you would enter "$FFFFFFFFFF"

Re: put password on netgear wireless router now airport won't connect
Apple uses a different hash method to generate the hex key equivalents from alpha numeric passwords than most other 802.11 vendors. That being said, you will almost never be able to join a 3rd party WEP network using the alpha numeric password.

OK, this is funny. I search Google for how to get my Powerbook to work with my Netgear router and WEP and find a fellow anti-circumcision activist has posted my solution. Thanks for the tip, MetalStenosis - er... MetalManiac.
