Holy Moses...they DO work!
So I'm sitting at my desk yesterday, when a guy who works for our client (I work for a dedicated help desk company) comes in to show off his new iBook. It was his first Mac, and he was extremely excited about it.
Being the Mac tech support guy, I had a gander at it...it was a nice li'l iBook, pristinely clean (of course, it was new!). Standard 12" 1.2GHz model.
"Where'd ya pick it up?," I asked.
He told me he had signed up for one of those "Get a <insert laptop or iPod here> for FREE!" sites, and they actually lived up to their end of the deal!
Apparently, the one he used was one of the "complete (X) offers and we'll send you what you picked" programs, as opposed to a referral program. His total out-of-pocket expenses for the required offers was less than $100 (he estimated around $75). He had to make a few phone calls to cancel memberships and whatnot, but he ended up getting a brand new iBook out of the deal.
I've been trying to get a free iPod for several months now, using one of those referral programs, but only 1 out of 18 referrals has completed their offer (9 more to go!); I kinda figured from the outset it was a scam, but I thought it was worth a try, just for grins.
So, I figured since this new program doesn't require referrals, I went ahead and created a gmail account just for this purpose and signed up for the requisite amount of offers (6, in this case). My estimated out-of-pocket expenses look to be in the $70 - $90 range. I'll report back with the results when I can.

Intentionally not spam, since he has not asked for referrals from us, nor has he given us the address of the site.
SPAM is defined by your intent and the way you word things. This post is A-OK.

Thanks, DO. That's pretty much my reaction just after I read jgc's reply. This is a discussion post, which is why I didn't mention where I saw this offer. I've decided to try it out myself, and I'm going to document the attempt and results.

If you email me a request, I'll let you know via email...as long as you promise not to post any links or mention it in this thread.

Why not post the link? It's not spam if someone asked you for it. Damn, you're a clever dude.

Re: Holy Moses...they DO work!
This could be a well thoughout attempt to sneak attack us with the SPAM. He posts an innocent topic detailing his attempt at getting a cheap iBook. In a few days he'll post again telling everyone it works and we should all try. He probably hasn't figured out how to word it quite yet because he does in fact need referrals.
Oh yeah guys! I found this great site that's offering a free iPod to anyone who signs up for a promotional magaine subscription or a few credit cards. No big deal, all you have to do is sign up and then after getting your confirmation for the free iPod, cancel your subscriptions. OH! And if you get declined for the credit cards, no problem, you won't get a free iPod, but you will get a terrible credit score and you might not be able to take out a loan for your education or a car.

I've been a member of this community in good standing for over four years. Do you think I'd risk my reputation and credibility by trying a cheap stunt like that?
I know the rules here. I respect the rules here.
The original post should be taken at face value: I actually saw the result of one of these giveaway sites, and I figured I'd give it a shot. I thought I'd chronicle my experiences here for discussion. Period. End of story.
Have I given the link to those who have asked? Yes, I have. I also plan to document every step of this process so I can keep everyone updated.
Please don't impugn my integrity without having something to back it up.

I don't think you got to know Kev just yet. He's a good guy, and I've never seen anything but good posts out of him.
To add, now that you bring this up, my girl's neighbor (whom I talked into getting a Mini over a G5, and he's very happy now - he replaced his TV and DVD player and two clamshell iBooks with a Mini and a 20" display) recently told me that his wife got the free iBook with similar conditions, said his out-of-pocket expenses were also ~$100, although his were a little higher. Still, for a $1,000 laptop, that's nothing.
I must admit, I haven't been to his house recently (only to see the new Mini setup), and haven't actually seen the 'Book, but I don't think he's lying just for kicks, either.
.. or maybe Kev and him are in on it...

Re: Holy Moses...they DO work!
OK...I've had quite a few inquiries, so I'm going to share some recommendations that I just emailed out to those who asked (the first few people didn't get this stuff):
CKM's email to those who ask about this site wrote:
OK, first off, here's the site the guy from my post said he went to in order to get his iBook:
<not listing link, as per MAF rules>
BEFORE YOU GO THERE, please read these recommendations:
1. Set up a spam email account to use for this whole deal. If you need a Gmail invitation, just let me know.
2. While you're going through all these steps, disable your popup blocker (or use IE). A pain, I know...but the terms for each offer appear as a pop-up. You'll want to take screen shots of all of them (CMD-Shift-4, space).
3. Document EVERYTHING. I took a screenshot of every new page I was brought to (actually, I printed the pages to PDF), and after I filled out the information (in case I need to refer back to what I put in there).
4. Make sure you follow up just after the "trial period" offers are over so you don't keep getting billed for stuff you don't need.
...that's about all I can think of for right now. I'll post in the thread with more news as I run across it.
Good luck!
-Kev
(and yes, I'm copy/pasting this email to multiple recipients...I had quite a few inquiries!)

Re: Holy Moses...they DO work!
My Experience Thus Far:
First, I set up a spam gmail account (not so I could SEND spam, but so my other real email addys wouldn't GET so much spam). I then went to the site and signed up. At this point, I wish I had taken some screen shots, but I didn't start doing that 'til later.
So, as soon as you sign up, you're taken to your first page of "offers"; which has a dozen or so choices. You are asked to pick ONE offer from that page.
I picked BMG Music Club -- I figured as long as I'm gonna spend a little money, I may as well catch up on my music collection. I got the most I was able to, and my initial charge was around $20. I imagine I'll spend another $20 there before all is said and done.
There is a link at the bottom of the first offer page to proceed to the next page after you've completed an offer; I clicked it.
The second page is pretty much identical to the first, with an additional offer requirement. This page asked me to choose two offers.
I chose a prescription plan that costs $1 for a trial month, and $20 for the following month. Then I chose Blockbuster Online for $10 for the first month. Now here's where I would've benefitted from having the popup blocker off

Re: Holy Moses...they DO work!
I'm going thru the motions similar to Kev. Seems pretty solid to me, just have to document everything you sign up for and make sure you cancel after the trial period.
Edit: Seems like it will be closer to $200 out of pocket expense, still a good deal to me.
