I've heard that also and his heart  is almost a 1/3 larger than the average man he can pump twice the blood.

His lungs were also more effective. They hold more O2 - Oxygen per breath than average lungs.

His Lactate threshold is better. He performs at a higher level than normal without being worn out by fatigue as compared to others.

Makes you wonder sometimes. I hate the people who say cyclying is not a sport. I'd like to see them get their fat ass on a bike and ride up a mountain.

Who says cycling isn't a sport?

Good grief. NASCAR isn't a sport. Cycling is.

You would be surprised how many late night sports talk shows will shun things like this. Unless it's football, baseball or basketball related it's not truly a "sport" to some of these hosts.

Re: lance armstrong

Lance Armstrong is the best road cyclist ever.  I mean it.  Sure, one could argue that technology really improved since cycling began.  But seriously, even with all the improvements it still comes down to this: who rides faster and better.  And that man is Lance Armstrong.  Everyone at this Tour de France had just as well made bikes and equipment.  And there were a lot of younger riders then Armstrong.  But he truly retired on top.  I hope that he never pulls a Michael Jordan.

Well, since you asked...

John Davis, one of the greatest weightlifters ever.

He won a world championship in less than a year after he started competing, at the age of 17.  He would be the youngest world champion for 50 years.  After his first victory, World Championships where stopped because of WWII, and he served a full tour of duty in that war.  During the war years before the US joined the war he became the first person to beat the 1000 lb total.

In 1946, 7 years after he became world champion, the championships resumed and he won it again.  He won the Worlds in 1947, the Olympics in 1948, and the Worlds in 1949, 1950, 1951 and the Olympics again in 1952.

In 1953 he injured his leg and was beaten by another of the greats, Doug Hepburn.  Another injury forced him to retire in 1956.

John Davis won 6 consecutive world championships, and 2 consecutive olympics.  That's with a 7 year gap in the middle of his prime lifting career.  Imagine what could have happened if that gap had not been there.

I'll have a go - Steve Redgrave, Rower for Britain.

5 Gold medals in 5 consecutive olympic games, basically means he's been among the best in the world for 16 years. Plus he was diagnosed with diabetes in 1997, and then went on to win in Sydney.

1984 - gold medal coxed fours
1988 - gold medal coxless pairs
1992 - gold medal coxless pairs
1996 - gold medal coxless pairs
2000 - gold medal coxless four

Plus loads of other medals in other games and championships.

Lance Armstrong though, he's a god, and a bit of a hero of mine.

Eddy Merckx  won the tour 1969-1972 and in 1974. Could only imagine how well he would of done if he had the bikes and technolgy we do now. Still one of the greatest cyclists ever.

Pete Sampras won Wimbledon 7 times;  3 from '93-95 and then lost one, then 4 more from '97-00.

Steffi Graf was number 1 in the world for 377 weeks.  She won Wimbledon 7 times, and won a total of 21 Grand Slam Singles titles.  In 1988 she won all four Grand Slam titles AND an Olympic Gold Medal.

Re: lance armstrong

Eddy is the greatest road cyclist ever. Lance won 7 TdF's. whoopee. that's all he ever did - he was either in the Tour or preparing for the Tour.

Eddy won 5 Tours, 5 Giros, 1 Vuelta, 1 Tour of Switzerland, 2 Tours of Belgium, 7 Milan-San Remos, 5 Liege-Bastogne-Lieges, 3 Paris-Roubaix, 2 Tours of Lombardy, 2 Tours of Flanders and 4 World Championships.

plus the hour record.

when he won the Tour in '69, he won the yellow, green and polka-dot jersies. nobody else has ever done that in a single Tour. Eddy is tied for the most stage wins in a single Tour (8), spent the longest time in the yellow jersey (96 days), and has won the most career stages in the Tour (34).

only three other men have won all three of the Grand Tours (Lance isn't one of them), and only one other man has won the Tour, the Giro and the World Championship in the same year (again, it's not Lance).

don't get me wrong, Lance is a great rider and has done a lot for cancer survivors and cancer research. but it's uninformed US-centric chauvanism to think he's the best rider ever just because he's won the Tour 7 times. it may be the only race the US pays any attention to, but that doesn't mean it's the only race.

There isn't one.
He is without question the best athlete the world has seen in a very very very long time.

Joe Montana was good.
Michael Jordan was good.
Tiger Woods is good.
Ricky Henderson was good.

Armstrong is in a completely different league all together.

I was an Agassi fan back then - Agassi had a lot of promise but just couldn't beat pete. Not when it counted anyway.

Hulk Hogan:  WWF champion for four years, defeating wrestling powerhouses such as The Iron Sheik, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff and King Kong Bundy; even going up against his former friend Andre the Giant in WrestleMania III, where he lifted the Giant over his head to bodyslam him to the mat, something that had never been done before. He lost the championship to Andre in a rematch, but won it back from Randy "Macho Man" Savage. He suffered numerous life and career threatening injuries, battling back each time to hold onto his title, and headlined eight of the first nine WrestleManias.

Lance Armstrong may be a great athlete, someone to respect for his ability and achievement, but put him in the ring where it counts mano y mano against the likes of Hulk Hogan, and there's no contest. The Hulkster will reign.

He won so many times because it got WWE (or whatever it is now) good ratings. Wrestling is fake.

Lance did not win 7 in a row. He had to take some time off for the cancer.

But the day belonged to Armstrong, who rode into retirement with a record seventh win in cycling's most prestigious event.

The 33-year-old overcame life-threatening cancer before landing his first Tour de France victory in 1999.

Well, accidents happen!  All their moves are choreographed, but if you make a mistake then you run a real danger of actually HURTING the other guy.  I'll put it another way:  Movies are fake, but people (especially stuntmen) get hurt making them all the time.  Heck, even stage actors can be hurt if something goes wrong.

It is very much like theater. However, it's much more physical, and therefore correspondingly more dangerous.
