In Camino, I get around it by using CamiOptions and stopping animated gifs from animating. Makes for a less enjoyable forum experience but it's a lot more usable that way.
Thanks for the tip. I just disabled animation and typing is much faster. I use Camino about:config preferences panes and modified image_animation_mode to "none" (found the gem at this thread). It doesn't seem to be popular though. I couldn't find it at MU or VT.
