I actually did this the first time I saw the optical illusion. Although due to degregation of compressed images, it's not a perfect gradient, but the color values in each square are pretty consistent.

Before removing the mask, I can see the edge of the swatch in square B while not distinguishing the edge in square A. When I remove the mask, square B has darkened, since I cannot see the edge of the swatch anymore.

Pretty damn close though.
