So I bought my wife a shuffle today...
...it is for our anniversary. I unboxed it so that I could charge the battery up and put some music on it for her. So far, I am impressed with it. I am hoping that the lack of screen won't turn her off, though. Is there a way to erase/reset the shuffle to remove all the music on it and store only data on it?
Here's hoping she likes it.......

Do it in iTunes.
On the screen where it shows you what's stored on your iPod there should be a slider to select how much you want for data and how much for music. Just give it all to data.

Plug in the Shuffle, and look under the iPod section of the preferences.

My sister just got one of those "other" flash players, and asked me to load it up with music while we were at the cottage together. The screen was a joke. I think it had about 8 characters on it, that scroll, slowly, when the song starts playing. You already know what song it is, long before the text scrolls enough to comprehend it. As far as clicking through the titles, that was a joke to, since you can only see the first few characters of the song name, you have to scroll across each song. The only way it would be useful is if you knew the exact name of the song you wanted, and could watch for the first few characters to flash by on the so-called-screen. My advice: if you want to do that often, get an iPod mini.

Re: So I bought my wife a shuffle today...
back in the day I had a 64MB Rio 600...wow that thing blew. It took so long to find things, the only reason it even worked was cause, well, it only held 64MB. Then it died, and I threw it at a brick wall (literally, I spent a year trying to fix it, then gave up).

Samsung makes a nice player, with a high res (color) screen, that is nice and fast at scrolling. The majority of those "other" players with screens, that are cheap, are crappy. However, there are some nice ones out there. Their biggest downfall though is that they don't work with the iTMS (unless you get one that does mp4 playback, and strip the DRM from the iTMS dls).

Re: So I bought my wife a shuffle today...
I love the shuffle. And since it goes through all the songs in a loop backward or forward you never really have to click through more than half of them, and I can do that in under 30 seconds so it's no problem.
Actually since I got my shuffle my 20gb iPod has pretty much taken the back seat, I only really use it on long trips or in the car.
Good gift btw!
I tried to buy my fiance one for her Birthday and she swore she would never use it. So I got one for myself but after about 2 weeks I couldn't get it away from her.

I like my shuffle, but have had it for a half year, and still don't really understand how the synchro works.
Also; I find annoying that it always auto-eject, because everytime you want to change something, it will mount & eject...
Else it's nice and fitting my shuffle walkman needs.

I'm glad I bought a shuffle. It's just perfect for when I run. I would eventually like to get a iPod for the car to replace my cd's.

Re: So I bought my wife a shuffle today...
I only have the ipod mini. I love the mini so much, I seriously don't see a need in my life to purchase a larger one. I have a LARGE and DIVERSE music collection. The mini can't handle a fraction of what I have (and I even have the 1st gen with only 4gb drive---that I can only fit about 500 songs on). I use it a lot in the car, work and when I mow the lawn, etc. I am unsure how long the pods are supposed to last...but I'm definately getting my money's worth.
Now shuffles....again, I don't have one...but it really hasn't interested me that much. I'm the kind of person that wants to hear when i want ot hear it and select it immediately versus clicking the forward button several times to find the song i want to hear. This is just for me though....
However, at my job, I see a lot of customers with their shuffle and their shuffle-bling going so, it tends to be real popular.
I hope your wife gets many years of enjoyment out of the shuffle. They appear to be a cool item and I keep hearing (reading) raves about it on the boards :-)

Since you've probably never tried it, set your iPod to "Shuffle" mode. You might be surprised!
Everyone has a large and diverse music collection. I have 350 GB at my fingertips. I have a 512 mb iPod Shuffle, and like it. I have broken my 20 GB iPod and 5 GB iPod in the meantime.

i think enabling disk use (keep it at 0) will keep your ipod from autoejecting

Iriver makes excellent screens on sleek MP3 players.

Those actually look good. The one she got was a tiny, useless screen, but she can't really complain - it was a gift. We did xmas in July at the cottage, since we are not going to be able to get together in Dec. She got it from our brother-in-law, but in his defense, we had a $50 limit, and that worked. The player isn't all that bad. The main point is that she will probably use it just like it was a screenless shuffle, even though it has a screen.

Is that your way of saying since some screen is not very useful/a joke, the shuffle with no screen is perfectly acceptable now in comparison?
Look for something worst and suddenly your piece of junk doesn't look so bad in comparison? interesting human nature.

With respect to the screen, yes.

I love my shuffle. I was kind of skeptical at first about the design, however after using it after a few days it makes sense. I can fit over 8 hours of music on my 512MB Shuffle (with recompressing the songs of course.)

Cheap bastard, buying your wife a shuffle for her anniversary. A mini would have shown that you really love her.

First of all, it's his marriage and you don't always have to spend a bunch of money to show someone that you love them. Secondly, he never said that the Shuffle was the only thing he was giving her. Also, the Shuffle has the convenience of a thumbdrive when it comes to data; no cables required.
