Re: XYZ, the MA MODS & Forums
Actually, I do have a serious question for Habs: Why haven't you started a blog and left here? I mean, it would give you the control that you seem to be lacking on these boards. You can freely delete comments left by others. In all seriousness, why are you putting up with "continued injustice"?
I need free tech advise for my Macs.
Just because I think Rofdeeg, Ali, and a few other people here are clueless doesn't mean I hate everyone. I mean, so what if Benightedbastard favours abusive moderators? So what if he's out to ban me? That doesn't affect my access to Balloon Help and Circuit Board.
Plus, I have to admit, I love to read the replies I get.
Why don't you leave. I don't see any brilliant posts from you. Do you even provide tech help? What do you do around here?

Orion, I think there has been drama over the last few years, but it's only apparent to those who regularly visit FFF, where all forum problems collide. If you stay away from MiniThink (a stew of dissension) or FFF, then you wouldn't notice most of this stuff. Most members who stick to a particular room and don't follow fights around the greater forum don't see this, which is why I think the "problems" aren't as bad as people are making out. It's truly a case of a few people generating most of the noise.
I only regularly visit three rooms besides FFF and the Squad, and those three rooms don't even ripple when these "huge fights" arise.Phydeaux wrote:

this can/has been done?
Closed threads can still be read.
Well, when I first visited the forums (sometime back in '99) it seemed like the board was more structured and the people in general seemed to keep things where they belonged. Now, however, it seems like too many people are letting discussions, mistrust, and hatreds spill over into the other forums where they don't belong. There are lots of political remarks and jabs in the Rant Room and Unplugged. I don't get into politics, so I really don't want to hear people complain about it in other forums. I don't think this is a Mod problem. I think it is just people dragging fights around the boards, messing them up as they go. Keep the tech forums all tech, the Rant Room all (non-Minithink) rants, etc. Its more these things that ruin the whole experience for me. I used to check in on the forums every chance I got because I enjoyed talking to the people here and listening to their experiences and problem solving solutions. Now, however, it seems that one can hardly find a thread where someone doesn't call someone else a name or make a jab at them, even where totally inappropriate. I find myself checking in far less often, mainly because the honorable people on these boards seem to keep becoming a smaller and smaller minority. By honorable, I mean that they obey the rules and try to make things enjoyable for everyone. If you want to bitch about someone, then take it to minithink or email. I don't want to be reading a thread about someone having trouble with their computer and then have it go off topic because a few people start bickering about how exactly it should be fixed.
That is more what I mean about people sniping and seeming agitated. It seems like even a small comment can get some of the members here up in arms these days. Take a chill pill people. The forums are supposed to be a place where people can gather and have intelligent conversation about various topics. It has evolved into a community where people keep blowing up at each other and hardly any constructive conversation takes place anymore. If this keeps up, I may just give up and leave.
I hate to do that, but how else can one get away from the bickering?
EDIT: How about this for an idea... You make a forum where people can air their greviances about each other. Call it "The Ring" or something. Let them duke it out there and get it out of their system. You would have to implement a policy that what happens there stays there and if they drag it out of that forum, they get a temp ban (maybe a week at first, getting longer if they repeat) and if they persist in it, then toss them out the door. Also, rules like no death threats, etc. may be helpful. Maybe just giving people a place to go all out would keep the other forums safe from degredation. Just a thought.

Re: XYZ, the MA MODS & Forums
Eep. No, MacAddict owes its members no such thing. They can obey the rules and take grievances to email. Personal problems should be handled personally.
That having been said, we have allowed more fighting since the formation of MiniThink and its implied "debate room" status, mostly because it's difficult to determine just where someone crosses the line between attacking an opinion and attacking the opinion...ater. We've tried to err on the side of free speech, but even when we crack down on flagrant DBaJ violations, someone sees it as Naziism. Ah well.
[Edit: And in case it's not obvious, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, just continuing the conversation.]

This is a prime post and the type of atittude that needs to go! Can't be civil?, love just sturring the pot? you need to get a temp ban from all of the forums in MA. Wanna come back and start smurf again, permanent ban. Trying to be flexable to people who are just out to be a-holes and are just here to start trouble is not worth the time or the web space. no foul reply, You do things the way the rules state or leave. I want the good people, the crust at the bottom can go!

No, it really is just more of the same.

Everybodys opinion counts, not raising questions or giving input or saying "it's somebody elses job" is why things have gone down hill.
If you don't give input now don't ever complain when things have spun out of control.
Two things...
1. It's all about context. I never said that no one's opinion mattered. However, in the context of these treads that keep popping up, they are irrelevant. This is not a democracy.
2. It is someone else's job. If you don't like a thread, or a specific post, because it is offensive, by all means, report it and let those whose job it is handle it. But don't come in here and create another thread to dispute it!

This forum is much more than just tech help.

Absolutely. I have both given and received tech help here over the years, but that is not why I stay. If I only wanted to talk tech/troubleshooting I would go to Apple's own forums, or Macworld, etc. However, I find that this community reflects how the magazine was in the days of Ian, "Freakin' Awesome!" et al. While the magazine seemed to go downhill when much of that staff left (I haven't seen any new issues in some time because of that), these forums still have that sense of humor and wit. It's not perfect, but it's a fun place and though I've looked around I have yet to find another community that can match it. Say what you will, but there is a reason that for all these years these forums have remained my most visited web site: they earned it.
Oatmeal's smilies page says it all. If this were just another "tech help only" board, do you think it would have inspired us members to make things like that?

I guess the real question is do you care what direction these forums go, or the standards it keeps? If the answer is I don't give a smurf! then I guess they are just fine. Conner I'm glad you voiced your opinion. (which are like.....) It surely shows where you stand.
I'm sorry if all I tried to do is make this a better place, and not let it grow into a smurf hole. It's sad to see when someone tries to make things better there is so much opposition. Some with nothing more then one liner comebacks.
I'm sorry I wanted more then a uncontroled playground, filled with some members acting childish like out of control juveniles spitting out your mama jokes till a internet fight starts. Till the hate can get so bad, till all some people look for is flames & blood.
Sorry for assuming things could get better if one person stood up and said something.
Sorry I don't walk around with blinders on.
Sorry I speak my mind and cut the chase.
I'm sorry some people don't care.
If that's the case than I'm sorry, I can't let my family hang here where it seems like a riot is going on at times. I will be the next member to leave. For I'm sure I won't be missed.
