The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

You know, there are some people who have major problems with the mods, but outside of one or two incidents (which everyone quickly recovered from), they have been wonderful people to me.  We have had some wonderful conversations and continue to have wonderful conversations (even about my "self appointed title"--loves ya Alien)

Being a moderator isn't exactly easy work and there are a lot of hard desicions to make.  While I may not approve of all of the moderators actions, I still have a deep respect for them.  Why?  Because they are managing to keep the boards afloat as best they can.

Forgive the rant, but we need to have some good comments about the mods, and not in a spot where it can be easily hidden (like inside another topic).

Re: The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

NO NO NO!  In all honesty, I don't want to be a mod.  I do this on several Yahoo Groups and find it to be a very awful experience (cleaning up the lesbian porn bots, etc).  Unless it's forced upon me, I will not take it.

Oooooh, can we get some lesbian porn bots here?  Please?  wink

In all seriousness, I agree.  While everyone may not agree on everything all of the time, most of the time, it's pretty civil around here.

You can please some of the people some of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can never please all of the people, all of the time.

Wow!  You've had "wonderful discussions"!  I guess that does it!  They're great!

You've had interesting discussions with moderators on a discussion forum.  That proves everyone wrong!

Being a moderator isn't exactly easy work

Sit on your ass, read threads, report offensive posts.

I can't imagine anything more rigorous than that.

Forgive the rant, but we need to have some good comments about the mods, and not in a spot where it can be easily hidden (like inside another topic).

So, basically, your whole point of this thread was to suck up?

You can please some of the people some of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can never please all of the people, all of the time.

Death wishes, insults, and moderators blindly defending this doesn't help.

Woah, you are completely underestimating what the mods do. Its a constant balancing act to keep the public happy. You need to decide what gets edited, what gets moved, what gets deleted. Usually, whatever you do gets you yelled at by some section of the posters. (Or just XYZ:D)

I don't think of it as sucking up.  We're only seeing certain posters being those-words-Alien-called-XYZ and we're not hearing about the positive points of the mods here.

Indeed, there's a difference in doing the job and doing the job well.

Of which, the percentage of those who do the job well seems to rise every day.

Re: The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

No, I pretty much summed it up.

Its a constant balancing act to keep the public happy.

Reality check: You mean like almost every other job out there?

Here's a tip for the moderators: Insulting your members won't keep them happy.

You need to decide what gets edited, what gets moved, what gets deleted.

Oh no!  The work!  Too much!

It's really simple:
1. Edit posts filled with profanity that slipped past the filter.
2. Delete spam, posts with inappropriate images
3. Lock threads that develop into flames
4. Move threads that don't belong in the right topic

If that confuses you, then you're going to have one hell of a difficult life once you get a job.

Usually, whatever you do gets you yelled at by some section of the posters. (Or just XYZ:D)

Yeah, usually calling someone a bitch will get you yelled at.

Re: The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

Spike's on the right track. Our responsibilities also include preventing MA & Imagine Media from getting their butts sued off because someone lacking in imagination and tolerance saw something they didn't like and/or some lacking brains and self restraint said something totally illegal, and making sure the system runs as smoothly as our limited scope allows. We also have to assist in evaluating new policies, reevaluate old policies as times change, vote on the behavior of individuals brought to our attention. This all requires a lot more active research than just casually reading provides. Finally while it's not an official part of our jobs, we moderators often end up being called on as resident experts. What topic does this topic belong in? What do you know of that tech issue? It all adds up.

Unfortunately, as I've complained before, MAf moderators aren't tech experts.

Not even close.

You're joking!

You guys have to vote to ban too?!

That, with your additional load of locking threads is just...unimaginable.

I don't know how anybody does it!  Locking threads and voting to ban!  Damn, and people think that coal mining is tough!

If that confuses you, then you're going to have one hell of a difficult life once you get a job.

In a forum like Desktops, a days work can be wrapped up in 15-30 minutes (with posting well researched answers). In a forum like Circuit Board it is more of a 48 hour a day job, even more than that if you do a good job at it.

Usually, whatever you do gets you yelled at by some section of the posters. (Or just XYZ:D)

Yeah, usually calling someone a bitch will get you yelled at.

And some posters you could be a bloody saint when you deal with them and they still wouldn't happy. XYZ comes to mind as a continuous example. I mean when people agree with him and he becomes petulant. He consistently posts on the edge of what's acceptable according to the rules never actually crossing the line. Since we feel he has not actively trying to troll but honestly believes his rhetoric we haven't as of yet been able to bring ourselves to the draconian option of banning him for being a jerk and formenting hard feeling amongst the other posters like he does even though we are sorely tempted to.

Re: The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

Habs, you're ignoring the context of the supposed "death threat" YET AGAIN.  I'll make it obvious that I'm posting as a member, and not as any "representative" of the MacAddict staff (oh, and none of the moderators are staff.  Only a very small few of the ADMIN are staffers.  Get it right).  For this post, I am just your average Joe.

[Starship Troopers] Hear that, everyone?  Rank has no meaning here![/crappy movie]

How about you shut the smurf up, and stop trying to crucify people for making comments that actually fit in the discussion.  It might've been more crude than you'd have liked, but this isn't the HAF, and we don't exist just to puff your pipe.  The NokX incident, AGAIN, was discussed and settled, and just because it wasn't public doesn't mean action wasn't taken.  Any other member would've been treated the same way.  And TRY to keep in mind that NokX was advocating the unjustified murder of innocent people by authority figures.  Joost simply tried to give NokX a different perspective.

So, I repeat, shut the smurf up you mindless smurfing idiot.

Who let you back in, anyway?  I strongly suspect you're just lashing out because you can't handle the fact that you were punished by an authority figure in the past.

Re: The MacAddict Mods are GOOD!

Oh my! He told me to "shut the smurf up."

If that isn't a sign of frustration after being proven wrong, I don't know what is!

The NokX incident, AGAIN, was discussed and settled, and just because it wasn't public doesn't mean action wasn't taken.

Action wasn't taken.  He was issued a warning - big deal.  I pull smurf like that, and I'm out of here before I can even hit the reply button to defend myself.

Any other member would've been treated the same way.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh wait...that wasn't a sarcastic joke?

And TRY to keep in mind that NokX was advocating the unjustified murder of innocent people by authority figures.

So?  Alien was justifying the potential of letting hundreds of innocent people getting blown up.  What's your point?  NokX expressed his opinion, Alien expressed his in a brainless manner.

Joost simply tried to give NokX a different perspective.

Yeah, a prespective of what it feels like to be insulted, then threatened.

IncarusFountain, keep your personal opinions out of this thread.  It shows your hypocrisy, and why you're a joke

So, I repeat, shut the smurf up you mindless smurfing idiot.

Hey, that means I'm free to insult you, right?

I would, but your life is sad enough, without someone telling you about it.
