new to ibook - few questions

hey im new to the ibook and mac in general. i bought it because with my student discount it was a steal, and a free ipod who could say no! anyways im bought my ibook for producing and editing my music. So my questions (one of them) is does garage band stand up to a program like Adobe Audition or Pro Tools, or is it worth buying on of those programs. And Second which is the best midi controller out there for best bang for you buck. thanks guys.

Compared to Pro Tools, there is absolutely no comparison. Garageband is fun for fooling around, but if you're serious about music, you should buy some real multitrack software.

Personally, I'm a Cubase guy.

Re: new to ibook - few questions

If you are super serious and gonna sell this music to people then get a G5 iMac or PowerMac. If you are just starting out and playing around then just use Garageband. Get the Jam Packs if you get bored of the preinstalled ones. By the way which iBook did you get? I just got a 12" with bto 60 gig HD and iPod mini 4gig. Also you might want to max the ram out. Drop in a 1 gig stick. I'll be doing that in the near future.

MacBook 2.0 GHz Black, 2 Gigs of RAM, 320 Gig HD, Superdrive
iBook 12" 1.33 G4, 1.5 Gigs of RAM, 60 Gig HD, DVD/CD-RW
PS3 80 Gig MGS4 Limited Edition

yea im seriouse but i also don't have the money a whole lot of money (student). So i think ill just stick with garage band for now and maybe down the road get adobe audition or pro tools. yea i did get the students union pack, what a good deal. plus just before i ordered mine they upgraded the ram (512 standard) and i opted for the 60 gig harddrive. i think ill boost it up to 712 shortly, i would do a gig but ill have to buy two 512 sticks, as they most likely put in two 256 sticks. but w.e im still waiting for mine to get here (canada) its in memphis right now!

Re: new to ibook - few questions

I got one of the new iBooks. You only have one open slot for memory, that will fit a 512 or 1 gig stick. The other 512 is soldered on the motherboard.

Re: new to ibook - few questions

Here's the deal with the iBooks

256 Soldered to the board

One Slot

Current iBook models ship with 256 in the slot and 256 on board.

Total of 512

These are your upgrade options

Either a 512 stick bringing the total to 768 or

install a gig stick being 1024mb bringing it to 1.25 gigs...

One thing to mention, Adobe Audition is currently only for Windows based machines and as a regular user of it I have to let you know it can be a real pain in the ass to work with as the interface is backasswards.
