Tips for n00bs?
Greetings,
Been on for two weeks, first-time poster. I'm a n00b to RtCW:ET, but I'm an energetic team player and (hopefully) a fast learner... although age has not been kind to my combat skillz. Apart from the READMEs that came with the game, are there any good guides for n00bs out there? Do you, perchance, have workshops where we can pick up the occasional pointer? Also, since I live in California and the servers (and most of the players, it seems) are on the East Coast, do you have any recommendations for other n00b friendly-ish servers?
(Let me clarify this whole n00b thing: I've played CounterStrike a lot, so I'm down with not shooting my team-mates, and I'm all over this goal-oriented play; it's just that I don't know the maps, and, like I said, I'm old and my aim isn't that great.
)
Thank you muchly,
Ranking Roger

Re: Tips for n00bs?
Hi
This is a great guide - everything from strategy and classes, to tweaks and configs to improve your game play. I found it very useful.
A few things that will make a huge difference to your combat skills:
[1] Headshots - always go direct for the head
[2] XHair customization - try making it smaller for improved accuracy, and experiment with color combinations for better visibility
[3] Never stand still! In a firefight, strafe left and right, jump up and down, and do whatever you have to do to become a difficult target.
[4] Experiment with removing "draw gun", "ejecting brass", "blood spatter" - and similar stuff. The less going on onscreen, the more you'll be able to concentrate.
As for learning the maps, try setting up a local server and playing alone as an engineer - that gives you the chance to find all the objectives and learn the maps without getting shot at. I don't know about servers, but the main thing is to find one with a decent ping - if they people are worth playing with, they'll be nice to noobs anyway.
Good luck and have fun

Nice link Mainwar! another good one is here. Ifurita has been in the RTCW/ET scene for quite a while, has a good way of explaining things too.

Re: Tips for n00bs?
I've found that the absolute first thing you need to do is learn the maps. I'd say the learning curve on the main 6 is about 3 hours each. So, just jump into a standard campaign and play for a while. Won't too long to pick up the maps. From there, if your aim is particularly bad, and you don't see it getting better I'd concentrate on the engineer class, and use the rifle. You can become amazingly good with the nade (grenade) launcher, and primary goal isn't to kill. As to the guides I'd wait on those. Tweaking, and trick jumps etc. can do a lot to improve your game, but a working understanding of the maps is essential.

Re: Tips for n00bs?
happypant's link is what really got me playing well - lots of good info plus stuff on scripting, etc. Target's got an excellent point to, b/c w/o knowing where to go you'll miss most of the action.
you might want to play cs a little when you're not playing wolf...I played cs for a week and lemme tell you what, when I came back I got 52 headshots in a 15 min round (rtcw, not et). idk if it'll work for everyone , but I take a lil "retreat" to counter-strike-ville once in a while to keep up my headshotting skittles
...but hey, what do I know

Re: Tips for n00bs?
If you don't want to play cs just find a server running the headshot mod. Body shots do nothing, and headshots are an auto kill. Playing there for an hour or so can do amazing things for your game.

Re: Tips for n00bs?
The best tips I can give you in no particular order:
1. Don't be an XP Whore. This means, don't go building erroneous MG nests if the objective is in jeopardy. The first 3 minutes of a map generally sets the tone for the rest of it. You need to start strong.
2. Don't bleed teammates. If a teammate is in a firefight with an enemy, and you don't have a clear shot, let your teammate kill the guy OR if your teammate dies, THEN finish off the enemy.
3. Corner camp. Pay attention to what routes your enemy is taking and if the opportunity arises, camp out for a few seconds and see if the bad guys run through. If they do, wait until they are all through and backrage them. (The MA guys can attest to my corner campness)
4. Headshots. If you are not getting at least 1 headshot per kill, you need to work on your aim.
5. Mouse settings. Set your mouse up so it is sensative enough to carry out a 180 yet it is still somewhat slow moving for the mid-long range shooting. This is a delicate balance between mouse accel, mouse sensitivity in your OS and mouse sensativity in ET. This helps with accuracy and headshots.
6. Always have a nade primed. Grenades are great deterrents. Alot of times, if someone sees a grenade, it forces them to use a different route or at least stall. If they stall, chances are, they are priming a nade and you can go in and SMG them in the face.
7. As a medic. Revive FIRST, shoot later. Period.
8. As Fops, use smart arty placement. Don't place arty on a place that is going to see high traffic from your teammates. Given, arty is one of those things that will TK from time to time but be careful. And remember, hand out ammo to your medics!
9. Engineer. Be prepared to die alot. No matter how good you are, you will undoubtedly die at least 15 times while constructing something. Don't get mad. Engineer is a thankless job.
10. If a medic is nearby, don't tap out. Not only is it frustrating for the medic, but it usually gets them caught with their needle in hand and subsequently killed.
11. If you don't know the map, listen to commands from experienced players. You will be able to tell who they are. I am always saying "build CP", "Kill their CP", "All clear", "arty on tank", "I need backup", etc.
12. Be polite. Say "Thanks", "No Problem", etc. when you are given supplies or revived.
13. Take cover when reloading if possible. This is key! I don't know how many times in a map I get in a firefight, run outta ammo and crouch behind a corner to reload. Normally, the enemy keeps shooting and I can tell when I pop back out he will only get a few shots off and need to reload. Reload = instant death in a firefight. Reload often.
14. Play to win, not kill. This is a big pet peeve of mine. I hate when you have a team full of medics who are just interested in their kill/death ratio and have no interest in winning. Always be smart about your class or if you are unsure, ask what class the team needs. When I play, I can have a horrible kill/death ratio but as long as I win, I am happy.
15. Leave ammo. Another pet peeve of mine. If a fops is throwing down ammo, and there are other teammates near, only take a couple of ammo packs. leave the rest for other guys.
16. GIB GIB GIB!! If you kill someone, gib them so they cannot be revived. This is usually the key to winning maps. If you gib, the enemy is not only forced to wait the full spawn time but they usually have further to walk to get to the obj.
17. Do not go kamikaze and rush into a room/hall when you know there are 5 bad guys there. Be strategic, plan your move. This is especially true when playing clan guys/gals. For instance, if you see a KOD engineer, you can damn near guarantee that at least 1 medic is nearby. If you see a medic, you can almost guarantee that a fops and engineer are close.
18. Don't get pissed. I don't know about you but if I get too mad, I start to suck. Keep a cool head. Don't hesitate to tell people "Great shot". It shows respect and that you are a stand up player.
19. Don't make excuses. I don't care if I killed you because you were typing, you lagged, etc. Joking is OK but I have seen some people who literally say "LAG!!!!" every time I kill them. It is emberassing to themselves.
20. Respect the rules on the server you are on. You don't want to get a reputation of the annoying guy. That makes you even more of a target.
21. As said before. Learn the maps.
Last but not least: have fun. It is just a game.
Love and frags,
Donkey

I agree with most of what was said, but for a few points.

Once you start to get good this point is EXTREMELY important. I actually keep mine quite slow. Better for firefights, not so good for turning 180 degrees. I figure that I need to turn 180 a couple times a map, but I get in TONS of fire fights. Thus I keep it slow for control. You need to find your own mix. There's a great tutorial out there on how to find where your sensitivity should be set to. Can't remember what its called, but I'd find it.

I would disagree with this. Always heal the engi, but if you see a mate go down, take out the guy he was fighting with, THEN heal him. You do it in the other order and you just get killed.
All other points were spot on, and this is a pretty good guide of things to keep in mind when improving your game.

Re: Tips for n00bs?
The 180 thing all lies in your mouse accel. Mine is very slow but the faster I move the mouse the faster I turn. I can pull close to 180's but still have the fine sensitivity for firefights. Mouse accel is the key.
As far as the medic thing. 90% of the time, you can jump out, revive, retreat, pull out the SMG and pop back out to fight. By that time, the spawn shield will have worn off of your mate that you revived and he can help out if needed. I guess it all depends on your medic skills. If I can revive 3 downed teammates, even if I die, there is now 3 on the field instead of 1. Chances are another medic will be along to revive me anyhow. More or less use your judgement. If your boy just got gunned down by an MG, obviously trying to revive is suicide.
