Re: Punk Discussion

Ah. BarlowGirl is good; not as good as CC, imo, but I should have liked to be at that concert.

Edit: I just realized how long it's been since I've been to a concert. Dangit.

Jokes? I mean, the pistols were good. Really good. But you've got to realize that every single British Punk was at a ramones concert in 74 at the 100 club. Strummer, McLerean, Rotten, Siouxse, Vicious, the lead man for the damned, Poly Styrene were all there at this single concert. The entire Bromley Contingent was there as well. After seeing it, almost all of them went on to form bands such as: The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Siouxse and the Banshees, The Damned, The X-Ray Spex, and The 101ers

Not to mention:
Iggy Pop
The MC5
The New York Dolls

ALSO: 'r' is a single letter that needs the company of other letters to form a word.

Re: Punk Discussion

I find the history of punk extremely interesting. I can recommend some really cool books if you're interested. It's really interesting to think that The Sex Pistols, one of the "most influential bands ever," was really an over extravagant advertisement scheme. Also, Sid Vicious really wasn't as vicious as history portrays him as, it's kind of sad to hear his story.

For a second, I thought you were doing your list in chronological order, and then I saw Fungazi listed before Minor Threat, and it bothered this smurf out of me.

Pussy Galore
The Jesus Lizard
Pegboy
Melvins
Black Flag
Suicidal Tendencies

Burning Sensations
and about 50% of whatever Steve Albini touches

Yes Edward, I would be interested in a few good history of punk books.  I have only read "The Last Gang in Town" which is a book about the Clash.  It was a very good read.

Punk is subjective - I'd throw in The Specials - ska is sort of a punk - reggae combo isn't it?

Ha Ha, after doing a Google search, I just found out I have a bit of a rarity - the 101ers Elgin Avenue Breakdown, albeit on tape (gave away my vinyl when I started travelling in '83 and put everything on cassette). I wonder where the heck it is confused

I also didn't know Strummer and Palmolive dated. The intraweb is just amazing tongue

I would kill to have an original 101ers vinyl!  Don't look how much it is worth, you may hate yourself.  But yeah, I'd say that some ska could be included  into the punk scene.  Bands like The Clash and Fishbone kinda walked that line imo.  Specials would be more punk than Madness, but I think that many of those early bands all had the punk ethos even if they weren't spitting on the crowd and playing blindingly fast power chords.  Funny thing is that I have been listening to punk my whole life.  I would listen to Dead Kennedies in 4th and 5th grade when everybody else was listening to, uh, I can't even recall what they were listening to.  I didn't even know a def lepeord song till I was in junior high.  Now, at the tender age of 31, I am just starting to go back into rock history and look at the bands I always shrugged off as not worthy.  Man, Led Zep, Cream, and other oldies are pretty damn good.  I kinda feel like the guy in Nick Hornsby's "High Fidelity"  My music snobbery has made me blind to some really great music.

P.S.  I was wondering when you would chime in SMITTY!  You are the ponkzersist for sure.  I really liked the Kooladee Manz song wink

I would say that this is a pretty good essentials list to early punk.  I might tweek it a little with MC5 and Iggy Pop, but that is me.  What would be a good essentials list for modern punk?  Mine would be
Minor threat
The Jesus Lizard
Shellac/ Big Black
Drop Kick Murphies
Man or Astroman?  (they are kinda surf punk, right?)
Sonic Youth (how could I forget them!  Gahhh!)

Naw. For me it's just about the music - what kills me is some of the cassettes sound okay and I can transfer them to CD - some sound like krep. I just paid $40 for a used Subway Sect CD (no longer being issued), because my tape is lousy and "What's the Matter, Boy?" doesn't have everything I want on it.

Found the 101ers tape, btw

Yeah, I mean that I would love to have a 101ers for the purpose of documentation of my favorite band, and to listen to it, not just for the value of the album.  I was just saying that it would cost a buttload to replace at this time.  Funny thing is that I don't have one Clash album.  I got into them in the late 80's/ early 90's while in junior high.  Everything I bought back then was on cassette (at least the Clash stuff was).  Now all those tapes have been stretched to hell and I have purchased them on CD.  Hell, I was still buying vinyl up till a few years ago.  I didn't have my first CD till 94 or 95.  I was the only guy in the dorm with a turntable (two of them and a mixer).  IMO, a lot has been lost through the new packaging.  I remember getting an album and studying the artwork, looking for notes etched in the vinyl (fugazi did this a lot), and having an overall better experience with the purchase than just getting a CD and poping it into the machine.  It just seems so machanical now.  Mayhaps I am an old soul, but I miss the days when vinyl was king.  I do love the iPod and the crisp sound of CD, but nothing compares to just relaxing and listening to an old vinyl record.

Re: Punk Discussion

I'm stuck halfway between (the unsightly and the serene)... [crispy ambulance]

I miss the extras that could be packaged in an ordinary LP: I had a copy of the White Album that had a huge full sized poster in it and the 4 8X10s, and that was just off the rack. I don't miss having to change records off a turntable, nor the inevitable skips.

One of the reasons my tapes held up is that I made certain that either used Sony CrO² or metal tape. I am surprised at how well most of them held up.

Since my only access to broadband is dragging my powerbook to work, I can't do many downloads, but I do appreciate everything you get when you buy music off iTunes. So I am beginnig to lean away from initially buyinga physical product and towards downloading, since the goodies aren't there anymore.
