Re: Punk Discussion
It was the Sex Pistols in, like, seventh grade and then I realized that songs with three chords in them are boring. Wire are pretty good, though, although I'm not sure they'd be entirely classified as 'punk.'

Pink Flag, yeah. 154, nah. But I liked 154 better.

Have you seen him in concert?
Sometimes he throws a free one. If he does in your area, drop by. Half the songs are secular cover songs, anyway. And good secular cover songs.

I wanted to go to the concert at D.C. when they played with the Bouncing Souls.

Hey, the Big Fish are cool. They're not spectacular but they are a good sounding band with a bunch of fun songs. Lay off.

Bands on big labels are fine, as long as they aren't making smurfy music.
Sounds rather judgemental to me.
Bands change - especially good ones. It's an artistic thing.
Sometimes they change in ways their original fans don't like.

I never understood that. It's like you have to be a broke artist to get any respect and not be a "sell out"?

Re: Punk Discussion
you wouldn't understand.
Money is the destroyer of art. It has happened time and time again. Occasionally there is a group or artist that will have a number of good albums while making lots of money, but they eventually suck.

Gotta disagree with you there - it isn't the money, it's the crap that goes with the relentless pursuit of fame and fortune that sucks the creativity out of artists. Most artists who are successful but shun the llimelight, create good stuff their whole lives, even those their styles may change in ways some people don't like. Conveniently for your point of view, those who toil in obscurity may be brilliant, or may be churning out crap, but who's to say?
I know some artists in the latter catagory, some have been well known at some time in their lives, some are well known among their peers, some have never had success in the convetional sense. Sometimes their stuff is good, sometimes not.

There is NOTHING wrong with trying to make money off of your music. If your good, people should have to pay to hear it. But when it becomes about the money and not about the music, then you are selling out. It is no longer art, it is a product. You're no longer focusing on creating something beautiful, you're focused on marketing schemes and getting labels to sign you for millions of dollars.
Take NOFX, for instance. Those guys are millionaires. Granted, most of their paychecks go towards either the Fat Wreck label or various charities, but they do make millions of dollars a year. They have never EVER sacrificed musical integrity for making more money. Just about every album is quality, and I don't foresee them ever making an album that sucks just so they can make money.

Granted - but a product that many people find valuable enough to buy, and I don't have a problem with that, nor do I see anything wrong with that.
Music isn't a religion.

While music isn't a religion, music is art. And art is no longer art when you are not doing it not for yourself, but rather for other people's consumption. It goes like this:
Band is small.
Band becomes talented.
Band becomes recognized on a regional level.
Band is picked up by big label.
Band releases hit album that gets launched into the main stream.
Band makes lots of money off of that album.
Band releases second album that is critically acclaimed by both long time fans and new ones alike.
Band makes even more money.
-sell out point-
Band quickly rushes third album, and makes it with money and fame in mind, NOT the music.
Album makes tons of money, but long time fans and fans of the second album alike are displeased with it.
This is selling out, and it disgusts me. Sure, they are making money, but they are no longer making GOOD music. They may play to sell out crowds, but rather than being the band that could have been remembered for the ages, they are now just some fad that will come and go. Their art is no longer art, it's a product. It's making money by using a name that people associate with good music, and instead turning out generic crap that only teen-age girls like. It's happened many times, and I hate it.

Re: Punk Discussion
I used to really like Punk back in the day. But I've heard so much punk music within the last 5 years that i've gotten pretty sick of the genre in general. However, a couple punk bands are still pretty good. You can check the following bands out to see if you've heard of their music or not. I've seen these bands live, so I ocnsider them to be pretty damn good. Let me know what you think of them.

my friend knows The Matches personally. Every time they come to Nashville, they stay at her house. This time they are not only doing that, but they will be celebrating the 4th of July with them. I would be to, but I am out of town. =[
