iDVD not working

I'm running panther on my duel 1.8 G5 and cannot get it to burn my DVD,... it just sits on 'stage 4' and won't progress. I'm not sure if it's a RAM issue (I'm running at base minimum) or, as someone suggested:

"Have you checked out your IDE settings in device manager? That was my problem, somehow my IDE controller kept getting reset to PIO mode instead of DMA mode and the DVD burner would just fizzle and fail after like 2 minutes. Once I got it set at UDMA it worked great."

^(I'm not sure what all that means) I'd appreciate any insite, suggestions, ideas... thanks.confused

Re: iDVD not working

I too, had this problem. And I tried everything I could think of. And then I tried all the suggestions that everyone else had, as well.

The one that worked, however, was the advice to just leave it alone!

Not to be facetious, but that was the best advice I found. I can't tell you how many times I canceled out of projects, how much time I spent looking for advice, and trying every sort of little trick. Just be patient, and let it go through its paces. Once your project is finished, the actual burning of the DVD's only takes a few minutes. I suppose there is a rendering process that it goes through that is quite extensive.

Check processor usage, and you will see (even if there is a spinning beach ball) that iDVD is chuggin' away.

Now, I have be admit that I was a doubter. To prove the advice wrong, I let my project go all night (a one hour movie, with lots of edits, music, transitions, and a full DVD menu). Imagine my surprise when the next morning it was all set, and asking me if I wanted to burn another -- which I did -- and it only took an additional 5 minutes per disc.

Since then, I just figure it is going to take some time, so I plan the extra time for overnight, when I go out, and/or when I am ready to walk away from the computer for some time. It honestly seems like it takes less time, now that I have learned to trust the process.

Good luck!!

Re: iDVD not working

I let it go for 11 hours untouched and it still would not progress past 'stage 4'... ??

I'm sure more RAM would be benefitial (it always seems to be anyway) - it's just frustrating that a new G5 w/ duel 1.8 would have such problems - I mean, that's why I spent the money on such a powerful system...

Re: iDVD not working

I had the same problem, in fact idvd has never worked properly for me.  a ten minute movie and 8 hours later the audio and video where out of sync.  now I use dvd studio pro and haven't had a problem yet.  takes a bit of getting used to but it's better then waiting around for stage 4 to finish.
