I've been using an Inspiron 600M in the field as a land surveyor for about a year and a half. No problems yet.

Thanks, reh. You should know that this is the first positive report for the Inspiron (not that I'm doing anything formal, just a look around).

(boy, this will teach me for posting a message and then not checking it until after the holiday weekend).
Yes, she was in fact looking at a Dell Inspiron. I will most certainly pass on the information about that model's lack of mobility. Plus the information about the different chip sets. A laptop definately makes sense in this case. No, I'm not trying to 'control' my girlfriend just wanting to help her make a decision that she won't regret down the line. Her feelings mostly come from a familiarity with Windows and not wanting to spend a chunk of money on something she's unsure about. In the end, of course she's going to choose what she wants but having worked with both PCs and Macs and feeling that she would work more smoothly with a Mac, I'm just trying to show the alternative to the PC world. She's not tinkerer at all and undoubtedly just wants it to work (honestly I can't see why the Dell has such an appeal...) But thanks for the input everyone. I'm not dumping her over a computer but having two apples under one roof would lead to a more harmonious world.

Just make her read the thread man, she'd know why we all like apples so much. My mom has an inspiron that's barely a year and a half old, and i'm reformatting it when I get back from school, because it's gotten so bogged down over that much use, and it wasn't ever really quick to begin with.

I almost forgot! Microsoft just announced that they know about WinRot, and how Vista is supposed to help prevent it.
For everyone that may not know what it is, "Win Rot" is how Windows degrades in performance over time. The only fix: reinstall Windows every six months to one year. We may have always known this, but now Microsoft has admitted it that it was due to the design of Windows.
