98 Saturn SL2.
It used to get 40 mpg, but I think the extra ethanol in Minnesota gas knocks that down a bit. I only averaged 36 on my last long trip.

I just traded in a 1995 Nissan Maxima with 188,000 miles for a 2001 Nissan Maxima.

Odd, I seem to get better mileage with 10% ethanol (89-90 octane, anyway). If you've previously been running non-ethanol, then you might need to replace the gas filter, as the ethanol will clean out the sludge that "regular" gas can leave in the tank.

I put premium in it. (92 octane)
But in any case, according to some informal testing (only three cars) it pretty much depends on the car you're driving. I'll buy that.
I'll ask about the fuel filter next time I'm in.

Re: what kind of car?
'97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the straight 6 Rambler engine, gets about 23-25 mpg average city/highway driving. I got it so I wouldn't have to drive my dad's truck that only gets about 10-11 mpg Highway.
Oh, and a higher octane rating it the gas means that it will burn more slowly and for a longer duration than a lower octane. It can burn a bit cleaner (not always) and give you a small power boost because the gasses are burning and expanding for more length of piston travel than a lower grade. It can also help with preignition and detonation issues in some engines. As my Engine Systems instructor in college said "using a very low octane gas in an engine is somewhat like slapping the top of the piston with a hammer and having it coast back around to the next firing cycle." I run 87 octane because my Jeep runs fine on it, but I did notice a difference in my dad's truck when I ran it on premium a few times. It accelerated smoother and had a bit more "get-up-and-go" than 87. Also, I got around 14-15 mpg rather than the usual 10-11.
As an example, Ether has a very low/possibly zero octane rating, which is why an engine will knock like crazy when you use it. That same instructor as above forbid us to use it in the shop after one student blew a hole through one of his pistons when he tried to start his newly overhauled engine several years back. He also had a student who snapped the starter mounting flange off when he was trying to use it. The engine backfired and rolled back against the direction of the starter, and the starter fell to the ground. He said that using ether was like lighting a stick of dynamite in your engine.

LOOK for motorcyclists. So often you will hear that a driver "never saw" the motorcyclist that they hit. As surprising as it may seem that you wouldn't see a vehicle, even if you looked right at it, a surprising study by Dr. Arien Mack shows that it is a real phenomenon.

2001 Neon. But not a Dodge Neon. It's a Plymouth Neon. Weird. Either way, it sucks. But it's a reasonable city car and it was a great buy. Or at least, that's what I've been trying to convince myself for going on 2 years. I can't wait to ditch it.

Any problems with yours? My daughter's trying to unload hers. The window mechanism they put in those was crap.
Nothing out of the ordinary. At 92k I put about $1000 into repairs (timing belt, tune-up, O2 sensor, & water pump). Those are all pretty standard when you get up around 100k except maybe the water pump. Also, in '99 VW changed the Jetta bodystlye mid-year, I have a late model. Or maybe I just got lucky.

The one my daughter's trying to unload is a Wolfsberg edition. I think the window problems applied to all the Jettas up to, i think, 2001. I heard there was a recall on them because of the windows, but that was before my daughter got hers used, and it was never fixed. If you start having window troubles, call the dealer. My daughter isn't the only one i know that's had these problems.

I'll keep that in mind. I also bought mine used, so maybe it had been fixed already. Thanks for the heads up though.
