What is wrong with Bush and his cronies?
OK, before I start, lets just say I am in the middle of the road politically. I think in general both sides have their heads up their collective asses.
What my point is, is that there seems to be something wrong with Bush and his fellows. Wether it is a feeling of superiority, or simple arrogance, to just not caring.
Now I don't believe Bush is a racist. I don't think he ignored Orleans because of that, I do think he and his ilk looked at this as a no win area. Not going to vote republican, no money to speak of, no need to care. A low priority basically.
With the Gov. cutting drastically the monies that was to go to the fixing and maintenance of the barriers when they knew it was not a matter of if, but when speaks volumes.
And stocking FEMA with a bunch of political cronies was the icing on the cake.
And speaking of cake, Bush's mother should keep her mouth shut. But her comments I think show how these people view the little people of the world. They simply can't concieve that people are so poor as to not have a car to drive away to saftey. Or that their whole world might be a small shack and nothing else.
Frankly, I heard the comments of the Bush supporters and their spin on this and it makes me sick.
Now before the other side goes foaming at the mouth, as I said before, This was a failure of all levels. The Goverment and local Gov. offices of Louisiana shares in a large portion of this failure.
I don't know who to feel more disgusted with frankly.
Your thoughts.

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 - I'm not sure though that the cut had anything to do with it.
Louisiana could have spent money on them too, is it really the job of the Federal government to pay for maintenance of the levies?
Supposedly though the upgrades were not to strengthen the levies, but to make them more friendly to barge traffic or something. I've also heard that the levy was possibly struck by a barge causing it to fail, but that is absolutely not confirmed.
I do think that there is enough smurf to spread around, the feds were slower at responding than they should have been, but certainly local government (both city and state) failed big time in their own responsibility.
They simply can't concieve that people are so poor as to not have a car to drive away to saftey.
There's a real problem with the car evacuation model -
The number of cars it would take to evacuate the city would cause an incredible traffic jam for days, and being in a car is the worst place to be during a hurricane.
Also, it was not certain where the hurricane would hit, and if NO evacuated every time they might be hit, it would be quite often.
However, the busses shouls have been fueled up and dispersed to strategic locations to help evacuate those who needed to evacuated if it did hit New Orleans - rather than being submerged in water themselves. That was a major failing.

The New York Times' analysis does show some local breakdown, but the pathetic response from the federal level cannot be denied. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/11/natio … ponse.html
The story is 6 pages and gives a good overall view of what happened in the political arena.
EDIT: Let me retract that. I've never been to New Orleans or the Gulf Coast.
Here's a passage on the politics:
Paul McHale, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland security, explained that decision in an interview this week. "Could we have physically moved combat forces into an American city, without the governor's consent, for purposes of using those forces - untrained at that point in law enforcement - for law enforcement duties? Yes."
But, he asked, "Would you have wanted that on your conscience?"
Bah

All the ones who cut funding for levee construction. All the ones who ignored environmentalists' concerns. All the ones who diverted important manpower to frivolous causes. All the ones that passed the buck of responsibility.

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston."
Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

I think you will find with very little effort that the environmentalists concerns were a part of the reason for the delay in some instances. Can't hurt the three toed flying snake, it only nests in that one spot and you can't kill an endanger species omg11!!11!.

That's why the government needs to pay attention, and listen to the legitimate concerns of environmentalists (Our wetlands are disappearing and we don't have as much flood protection as we did - maybe we should rebuild the wetlands.) vs. the concerns of the really nutty environmentalists. (Don't chop down that tree, it's the avatar of holy mother earth!)
Environmentalists, just like *twitch* republicans, *twitch* spew a lot of bullsmurf that covers up a few good points. You owe it to yourself - and the government owes it to the people - to figure out what those points are and take the necessary actions based on those points.

Re: What is wrong with Bush and his cronies?
Simple - You are placed and promoted in BushCo by loyalty and service to Bush, not by competence. In fact Bush punishes messengers of bad news. BushCo is designed to develop a culture of sicophants. which includes the normal gate keepers like the press.
The consequence is Bush himself lives in a fantasy bubble of limited information and flattery.
Now combine that with the fact he does zero self-reflection and assessment by his own admission and add the dangerous component of intellectual sloth. He screws up, doesn't know it, gets told he is a genius by the sicophants, and never ever assess the results of his decisions.
He is an empty suit who thinks he is a genius and is unsuited for the complexities of the job. He is dull, arrogant, isolated, disengaged, and unreflective. A very dangerous combination.
For comparison - google Louis XVI

You stumbled across an excellent example, wetlands.
You're thinking 'everglades' and marshes but wetlands are also the rainy year mudholes out in my fields and get regulated as such.

Two links (I haven't heard of the guy)
A) That Bush listens to him every week
B) That it is a hateful organization
