If this is in response to posts in this thread, there is a little evidence for my prediction (and any others involving an iTunes video store and/or iPod video). I had already posted a link but here is the link again in thumbnail form for the lazy.

On earlier iPods, your only means to confirm the complete transfer of photos and camera-made movie files was to check the number of items your camera showed against the number the iPod shows; if they matched up, you could assume that it’s safe to erase your memory card. But on the iPod photo, that’s been improved: after downloading a “Roll” of film, you can immediately dive into a collection of your photographs and movies that appears in the iPod photo’s standard photo display mode. Movies are represented by small circular icons, which if clicked upon indicate that they cannot be viewed on the device’s screen.

as for the video images.. try dragging a .mov file onto itunes. this is old news.

You totally missed a major part: the plainly labeled "buy video" and "gift video" buttons. Look closer along the left side.

This is just a minor change where some components may slightly exceed the published specifications for the Mac mini.  The specifications of all Mac mini computers will be at least equal to what's printed on the box and all other marketing material.

Right from Apple's mouth.  I was trained to say that... pretty much word for word.

Don't know what an SKU is.

And I'm disenchanted with the iPod because it's a music player.  That's it.  It doesn't increase my productivity, it doesn't make my life considerably better, it just plays music.  No matter how cool or small it gets, it's designed to play music.  It's a one-trick pony to me and I just no longer see what the big deal is.  I love my iPods to death, don't get me wrong, but I'm just not excited by the prospect of an iPod that haphazardly plays videos.  Great, now it's a device that plays music and videos... why?

I dunno.  I want computers and thoughtful software.

From your inventory receivables -- stuff that belongs to the same family of products that's carried right now, or anything that's completely new?

And I'm disenchanted with the iPod because it's a music player.  That's it.  It doesn't increase my productivity, it doesn't make my life considerably better, it just plays music.  No matter how cool or small it gets, it's designed to play music.  It's a one-trick pony to me and I just no longer see what the big deal is.  I love my iPods to death, don't get me wrong, but I'm just not excited by the prospect of an iPod that haphazardly plays videos.  Great, now it's a device that plays music and videos... why?

I could care less about videos myself. I try my best to cram functionality into the iPod. The podcasts being whipped out during that iTunes update was important, because it did throw in something that could be more useful than just music. I know that TWiT is a highly educational tool that I listen to every time one comes out, and the iPod+iTunes just makes the organization of getting it much easier. Aside from Apple's promotion stuff, I definitely like being able to keep a back up list of my contacts and datebook that I usually keep on my phone(s) handy on the iPod, in case I destroy a phone or it's battery goes dead and I need to access a number for a phone call when the iPod is still kicking. Oh. And I've got a Bible loaded into it, so that a nice thick book is one less thing I have to carry around and can just whip up what I need on the 'pod.

Could a Palm Pilot do the same jobs? Sure. But is it pwetty, simple and awe-inducing? No. But you know all this. wink

I think controlling a computer by manipulating a pile of rat guts would be great. Shape it into a pile that is most ergonomic then- push, squeeze, and splat your way to computing bliss. Also, keep one mouse alive in your pile for the rumble pack effect.

Re: Just One More Thing...

OK, so Steve-o has dismissed the idea of video on the iPod in the past, writing it off by saying "why would anyone want to watch video so small?" or something of that nature.

And that's about right.

However, it's been my suspicion that the iPod was designed from the outset to be a multi-function device; I believe this is why they chose the enigmatic name "iPod": a "pod" doesn't specifically reference music. Already, it can serve as a digital music player and a portable data storage device.

So, presuming Jobs' stance on portable video stands, yet we still lend credibility to the rampant rumors of the impending video iPod, then what would be the purpose of video technology on the iPod? The only scenario I can see meeting the utilitarian demands typically established by Apple is QuickTime integration in the iPods for the implied purpose of acting as a portable media storage and playback device. However, that in and of itself would contradict the previous reasons for NOT integrating video on the iPod...so I'm thinking there will be additional (practical) functionality, and I believe that functionality will be on-the-fly video capture and playback.

Of course, with USB2 now being the standard on iPods, I'm not sure how that would work (since I think most USB ports on DV cams are typically for still photo functionality); it may require a reintroduction of the FireWire port.

So, if this does end up being an announcement of a video iPod, I think there will be at least two parts: [1] the announcement of a new iPod that will take full advantage of the new features, and [2] a firmware revision that will add at least basic playback features to some existing iPods.

Of course, there may be something in there relating to utilizing the iPod as an on-the-go Podcast studio. After all, the nano (and the "regular" iPod) models come with a "line in" function that has yet to be tapped (at least on the nano). Perhaps whatever is announced here may utilize that ability.

Of course, it's late (or early, in my case), and I'm not yet lucid, so I could very well be talking (or typing) out of my ass. However, whatever is announced, I don't think it will simply be video playback ability on the iPod; it'll be a bit more impactful and/or useful than that.

OK. I'm not one of the folks who can claim to know -- so I'll ask:

I guess since, what '97/'98, what has Steve pulled out after saying, "Just one more thing..."? My spidey-sense tells me it's usually somethng audacious. If memory serves, didn't he say that just before mentioning that he had been using an Intel machine last June?

I say, look for something completely new. Like 'Think Different."
Only six more days to find out.
That is all. Thank you.

Re: Just One More Thing...

If it's an iPod with video capabilities, wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense to call it iPod video, seeing as Apple's gone with iPod mini, iPod photo, iPod shuffle, and iPod nano? What's with all these vPods and video iPods that people have been saying for like ever?
