Re: Just One More Thing...
OK, after reading this piece, my mind got to racing, and this just came out of left field:
Image of curtains implies visual entertainment (theater/cinema).
"One more thing..." implies a BIG announcement, something that will trump the nano.
Imagine this: Apple announces an agreement in principle to be acquired by Sony, and will produce media devices (music, games, and video) with exclusive access to content by Sony Entertainment. The PS3 is rebadged as an "Apple Entertainment/Media" device and brought out with much fanfare next year. The VAIO line of computers is eliminated and replaced with the current/future Macintosh lineup.
A little far-fetched, I know... but it kinda makes sense in a vague sorta way...or does it?

Not so far fetched really. My friend called me the other day and was aking why doesn't Apple team up with a gaming company and make some sort of portable game system. He said he would go buy one and knows some more people who would go out and buy something like that. You figure the iPod sells well and the gaming market is huge right now so why not. Hell if I know.

The theater curtains also tend to make me believe it will be a video related announcement. Steve has repeatedly said that video on an iPod would be worthless, yet everyone still seems insistant that it be an iPod feature. Why? Steve has never said he didn't believe in portable video, he has just stated it needs to come with a bigger screen. My guess would be that Apple will release a completely new product for portable video purposes, and that it will follow a tablet pc/laptop styled form factor. Of course, maybe Apple wants to release its own video camera or gaming system, that could be cool, too

Holy crap...envision an "iGames Store"...like the iTMS, except you can purchase and download games straight to your <new Apple co-branded gaming console>
...or via iTMS to your iPod, then sync with the console at your convenience...

So Steve has said it won't work. You know what else doesn't work? The ROKR.

Steve has openly stated that the ROKR was an experiment. I think Apple was looking for a low risk venture into the cell phone market to test the waters...enter the ROKR. The failures of the ROKR have taught them alot while Motorola carries all the risk. Remember, the ROKR is a Motorola product licensing some Apple software, not an Apple product licensing Motorola hardware. Big difference.
Not quite sure what you mean by "milking" the iPod? The iPod is the most ubiquitous consumer device on the market. Each iPod release has brought something new or worthy to the table. The Nano is actually a hugely significant product advancement in the iPod line. If by "milking" you really mean "improving", then I agree.
I still contend that this announcement could be the long fantasized iTablet or home media center, complete with specialized software and an Intel processor.

I can't envision Apple staging an event like this for an upgrade to a platform they are leaving in less than 6 months, unless of course, it is the announcement of the first Mactel.

Re: Just One More Thing...
Jobs also said iPod video doesn't make sense (at the time) because there was no content for it. He often gave the example of not being able to jog and watch movies at the same time.
If Apple could get the right interface, screen size, legitimate content, find themselves a reason for it, it could happen.

OK, so Steve-o has dismissed the idea of video on the iPod in the past, writing it off by saying "why would anyone want to watch video so small?" or something of that nature.

Oh. We don't call them SKUs.

Figures. I finally make up my mind, order an iBook, now I read this. This had better damn be an iPod event.

So therefore every single retail outlet in the entire world uses it... right? Even Apple?

No the Universal number for every retailer in the US is a UPC. A lot of major retailers come up with their own database of SKU numbers for products that are completely unrelated to the UPC number. Apple probably uses model numbers as SKUs like: M9843LL/A. But that is not the iMacs UPC, nor how CompUSSR probably tracks it in their inventory system. It's complex, but that's retail for you.

Rumors are flying all over the 'net, and apparently people know that its a video iPod, with a smaller wheel located lower on the body, to make room for a larger screen. They're saying its a couple of mm's thinner than the 60GB color iPod.

Re: Just One More Thing...
Does anyone think that this "One more thing..." could have anything to do with PPC chips? Like dual core G4s and G5s for the last generation of PPC based macs? Think about it. Apple had a big event and made a big to-do about the transition for developers, but it hasn't "released" any info on the consumer level yet... Maybe this is a "One More PPC Thing..."

There are rumors everywhere. Think Secret thinks it's new PowerBooks and PowerMacs... my guess is that they're on the right track.

I can't see a special event with that title being yet another 200 mhz speed bump. I really doubt we are getting mactels already. Frankly, I have no idea what they are releasing. It is probably not going to live up to everyones expectations (the iPod wasn't met with nearly as much excitement as it has now). Not saying it is going to be a great new product either, just don't think it is going to be whatever everyone has been dreaming of.
