The Great Hollywood Journey, Part II

And that Executive Producer’s name is Peter Jackson.
...
If I didn’t make this clear in my previous update, Bungie’s in this for the long haul – 100% dedicated to making the Halo movie the best it can be.

Mighty Joe Staten has some very, very, very big news about the Halo movie. News so large that mere secrecy cannot contain it. It's time for us to share the fact that the Halo movie will rock. Guaranteed.

Re: Movie

A little extra...

Of Lords, and Pawns
The Register has a slightly different spin on the 'Peter Jackson as Exec Producer' news than other sites have shown so far - they're wondering if Jackson isn't just window dressing, 'more for the poster than the creative input'. While it's possible that this might have been on Microsoft's mind, there are a few things to remember: Jackson's a fan, so it's unlikely he'll sit by if a totally crap movie is being made on his watch; with Jackson (and wife Fran Walsh) comes their special effects studios - WETA Workshop and WETA Digital - meaning that the environment, at the very least, will be spectacular; and Bungie themselves are quite excited about Jackson's involvement - if it were only a publicity stunt, I've no doubt that we'd hear grumblings about it from the dev team. The other tidbit of note about this article is that it was written by Tony Smith, a name that longtime Bungie fans might recognize - he's the man behind the Origin of Species series of maps for Bungie's earlier game, Marathon, a project that won almost universal acclaim... this is a guy who loved Bungie deeply back in the day. He doesn't want to see this go wrong, any more than the rest of us do. Thanks to Matt Warner for the heads-up. Update: Reuters has an article on the situation, as well - and it actually includes quotes from Jackson (something most other articles are missing). Jackson says that his excitement let him and his wife to become "creative godfathers" on the film - this would suggest a non-hands-off approach.

"As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo's' premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," Jackson said. "Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we're delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."

This doesn't sound like a guy who's on board for the poster... thanks, mnemesis. (Louis Wu 18:48:57)

Re: Movie

Halo Movie Facts
- Alex Garland (28 days later) wrote the screenplay. (He is not Directing)
- Peter Jackson is the Executive Producer (He is not the director)
- WETA is doing the Special Effects.
- The Movie is scheduled for a 2007 release. (No exact date has been announced)
- Universal Studios and 20th Century Fox are working togather on it.

Rumored- These are pure ruumors not facts and may subject to change
- Kevin Allsworth is playing Master Chief (IMDB)
- The Movie is based on the book Fall of reach (Gameinformer Magazine)

If the movie is going to be based on The Fall Of Reach then the movie will look like a rip off of Soldier

Re: Movie

...and maybe delay it 'til '08.

Halo Movie Timeline - The Real, and The Imagined    May 30, 2006
One of the downsides of running a relatively popular Halo fansite is that we hear all the rumors, many, many times... and I worry about giving those rumors extra credibility simply by acknowledging them. Sometimes, though, a rumor is so widespread that NOT acknowledging it seems pointless - a recent one, 'The Halo Movie has been pushed back to 2008' appears to be one of those. This first showed up on IMDb a few days ago - the release date had been changed from 2007 to 2008, without any explanation. It was mentioned several times on our forum (usually to responses of 'IMDb lets anyone edit their content - that's not trustworthy'), but yesterday, started showing up on bigger gaming sites (TeamXbox, Kotaku). None of this has been confirmed with anyone who actually knows anything - but common sense suggests it's probably true; as far as anyone in the public knows, not even a director has been chosen at this point, and the end of 2007 is just 19 months away. That's a pretty tight schedule for a film - if it has no cast or crew, or filming schedule. Hopefully, we'll get word of what's going on in the not-too-distant future... but in the absence of that official word, the internet will continue to oblige by filling the vacuum with rumors. Well if H3 doesn't come out until the '07 holidays. The movie could ride on the buzz wave created during launch or the Bungie folks who are to help guide the movie are just too busy with H3. I can dream can't I. wink

The year could shape up something like this:
2007 1stQ Vista and H2 PC
2007 4thQ H3
2008 1stQ H:Movie

Re: Movie

If I'm dreaming, I'd settle for H2 Vista bundled with H1 version 2.0, both redone in DX10 with a SM4.0 rendering path using geometry shaders to add real 3D-ness to, e.g., the city centers in High Charity and New Mombasa instead of skybox-type hacks, and to round out 1's blocky boulders and whatnot, and checkbox FSAA on supporting hardware.

Oh, and m/kb support, hacked or not, for 360 (you got a hint of the difference that'd make for me last weekend... btw, my mouse was in the car; it did spill out and go unfound 'til later)... and an early release for H3 Vista. I figure that's possible now with XBLA- not concurrent, but not two years later, either. Bungie'll be done with Halo after 3, at least this story arc. (I really hope MGS doesn't try to milk an MMO out of that universe; I'd sooner play a Planetside/GoW MMO than be an imitation Spartan).

Hmm... June 1. Only 7 months 'til Jan '07. Mmm, H2 Vista... cool

Given the 360 is a console and should be interacted with as such, I doubt you see anything more advanced than the little Lik-Sang toys for the prior generation.  The PS3 is allegedly the more computer-like device.  And don't take that as a jab, I realize your comment is in a "as long as we're wishing" vein.

No prob- it is wishing, I'd be content with another Lik-Sang (true support would probably have to be coded into the games, which it isn't, and XBLA makes it clear MS prefers to keep the platforms separate even while bringing them together), but when checking the L-S forums a month or two back, it looked likely there wouldn't even be a Smartjoy Frag 360 Ed. Can't remember why not offhand- licensing? USB 2.0?- but no one had succeeded in making anything like that work after 7+ months. Guess I'll wait and let finances, and some time spent with the Xbox controller, decide if/when I get a 360 and Halo 3. I might end up waiting for the Vista version, hard as that'd be... even a toy adapter like the Lik-Sang could tip the balance, tho. Levi saw how differently I played H2 on it. Rusty on the controller after a year off, but still much better & happier on the floor with a beater 400 dpi mouse at full cord stretch and sensitivity on 10, 6 feet from a big TV and a mousepad too small for that dpi. If my bag o' stuff hadn't fallen in the car & my 2000 dpi wireless laser jobbie spilled out, I could've actually shown some chops. smile

Also, as he and DocB keep reminding us, there's Gears of War coming... wink

(I'm not getting a PS3, but altho I read last year about m/k support with it, I haven't heard anything since. I don't know at this point if PS3 games will have other than controller support, either).

Points for trying to work in as many 7s as possible, but if 18 months seems unlikely, 13 seems... 5 months less likely.

Now, if you could work a 343 or 2401 in there and still have an '08 release date, we'd have... that. And you'd get http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/banstick.gif ... wait, I mean http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/kudos.gif !
