Because many men are obsessive by nature?
I don't like it either - and I've never been the target. It's just disgusting to watch.

Not as long as there's a 70¢ to $1 earning ratio.

Men don't have the market on obsession cornered by any means.
Men will lose interest when in their eyes you no longer appear young, thin, nubile. Then you will be ranting about what pigs they are because they don't appreciate your wit, intelligence and experience.

I suspect that what is going on - they think that because there is a common interest, that they can make you like them if they try hard enough.
Sorry to break it to you, but that doesn't just happen in the geek world to girl geeks - it happens everywhere.
In college - my roomates brother had an obsession with my sister - they had some common interests, and that combined with the fact that he was the brother of her brothers roomate just added up to disaster in his head.
It's even worse if you aren't mean to them.
I'm not suggesting that you do be mean to them - that has other side affects.
Mean girls don't have the problem as much, but nice girls who become mean to these dweebs end up having it spill into other areas and are not as nice as a result.
But trust me - it's not because you are a geek and female, it's probably because you are pretty and are a nice person.

I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Aw, Peach, BTDT. Do I ever agree with how you feel. I was you twenty-odd years ago, when female geeks were even more rare. Fortunately, I'm fat now, as I still look much younger than I really am
I DO have some good life advice, though. Marry a fellow geek. You should never have to try to explain why you need $400 for a 40-meg hard card. You should never have to explain why you need him to fetch you pizza while you continue coding. Unequal relationships just don't work. Geeks are frequently also good at fixing things, once you forcefully redirect their attention to, say, the nonfunctioning vacuum cleaner.

I think I love you!
From what I can tell, either way, you're screwed. Bad people are punished by society's laws, and good people are punished by Murphy's Law.

You, ma'am, speak the gospel here. My husband and I became infatuated with each other back in high school. We took a trip to DC and on the plane I pulled out my PowerBook Duo 280c. He was a huge Mac fan but admits he was afraid to talk to me! I noticed him staring at my computer and my heart went all a flutter. I was reasonably unattractive back then which means he was interested in ME. When I showed up at a friend's party after graduation having dropped sixty pounds and wearing much skimpier clothes, his level of interest remained the same as before. We sold computers together at Sears and people told us even back then we'd end up married.

My schools never did anything with planes
Well, OK - in Junior High one of our students went to the national spelling bee - and she came in third in the nation, too. But other than her, I'm not aware of any of my classes - public school or private school - flying anywhere.

There's several middle and high schools in this area that do a DC trip every year.
