lame verizon phones
How come all verizon phones are so f'n lame? The best we get is the moto E815, Tre 650 and some LGs. They've got crappy batteries, no bluetooth OBEX and most are not isyncable. The only advantage over other providers is the service and coverage, which is amazing. I just wish verizon could have the RAZR or the Hiptop/sidekick/poserphone

Re: lame verizon phones
Verizon CDMA RAZR is coming very soon. Expect it before Christmas.
That said, yeah, Verizon as a multi-national corporation sucks BALLS, but that's what makes their service area so great. Personally, I work for a smaller CDMA regional carrier, and we use their network when a customer is out of range of our market. All the benefits of the network, no crappy phones or uncooperative customer service.

Re: lame verizon phones
No one outside of the labs knows. I won't know until after it ships with Verizon, because that's when we get our seed units, frustratingly.
Verizon's might be crippled, but hopefully it'll be within the same restrictions of the E815 and easily crackable.
And it expect it to be a little thicker. Not by too much, but it will be just slightly.

it sounds like they're changing it a bit, any chance that it will still have bluetooth OBEX?

Re: lame verizon phones
Hopefully it'll be a decent phone. The only thing the GSM Razr has going for it is the looks. It's slow and very limited. My E815 has 45 MB internal memory, compared to the Razr's 5 MB.

Re: lame verizon phones
doesn't the RAZR have 40MB? And the only thing thats been keeping me from getting the E815 (aside from looks) is bluetooth OBEX. God, i'd kill for it.

E815 -- OBEX is possible, but has to be through a hack.

Re: lame verizon phones
Put your gun down, because the E815 can be hacked. Phy's link is correct. I have all the tools necessary (software-wise) to perform the edit. PM me and I can send 'em all to you. You do need a Windows 2000 or XP based PC to edit, however.

that just ruined my day. Will it work with VPC?

Re: lame verizon phones
I wouldn't try it. The phone is testy unless the conditions are right. I say that because I know a few fellows who lost their v710 because they didn't do their seem edits just right. Surely you have a friend with a PC.
But yeah, I wouldn't do it through VPC, and I'd make sure the phone is connected via USB directly into the computer for the hack and not use a USB hub. THat's the way to lose a phone.

It doesn't work through VPC. The E815 is more stable than the 710. Lots of people have hacked 'em with no problems.

Re: lame verizon phones
Anything's gotta be better than T-Mobile.
I went on a road trip with a Verizon user, they almost always had service, whereas I, a T-Mobile user, had service a bit less than half of the time. Plus, T-Mobile's customer service is the worst ever. I swear, you have to sit at the phone for at least thirty minutes, then there's the classic "oops, i can't help you", or maybe even they'll ask you for irrelevant information. Who knows?
I'm unoriginal and boring. The end.

Yeah, let me clarify. I'm not saying to not attempt the hack. I'm saying not to attempt the hack in VPC. As you say; won't work. All risk, no reward.

Re: lame verizon phones
The reason the e815 can be hacked is because Motorola makes the same phone under different model numbers across different carriers. Carriers, that is, who haven't crippled their OBEX profiles. That way the framework is there on the other phones and can be modified to work on Verizon's phone. Given that, it's likely that the VZW RAZR will be hackable since bluetooth in Cingular's version is enabled.
I love everything about Verizon, customer service, coverage etc. Their phone selection is getting better I think but right now it's pretty limited. Much like Apple, overall I'm more than satisfied with the product in general and it's a fair trade to put up with some of their oddities.

I'd understand if it's been that way the entire time, but it's not. The v710 is offered by verizon, and the v710m is offered by regional carriers. The difference between the two models is that you can use the multimedia suite in the latter to do file transfer via bluetooth BUT IT IS NOT OBEX, so it's not Mac compatible.
When the v710 was announced, and what papers from the FCC show is that OBEX was supported, and so was speakerphone enabled with the lid down, like on the newer Nokia 6155i. Both features didn't make it to Verizon's network. OBEX for the purpose that Verizon wanted us to use the PIX service; speakerphone with lid down presumably for reasons of confusing the phone with one that is PTT. But alas.
The v710 and the v710m both have the ability to do an OBEX file transfer. No doubt about it. But there's no way we can get the software to make it work unless we get it from Motorola. We won't, so long as Verizon is around.
The support on the E815 is a result of the backlash against Verizon as a result of the v710 debacle. Nice, big class-action lawsuit over it. Verizon got off easy, however.
Given that, it's likely that the VZW RAZR will be hackable since bluetooth in Cingular's version is enabled.
Nuh-uh, I wouldn't even begin to assume that. The VZW RAZR may lead to another v710 debacle. Since the phones use different connection technologies, it's most likely that they'll use different chipsets and thus, support different levels of Bluetooth. FWIW.

I'm okay with oddities, but the v710 situation really cast them as "damn evil". Making money is fine as a corporation, bullying other companies into crippling their products because you're afraid of someone taking the flash for that product and using it on a phone you're selling with the intent of selling other services is despicable. It's why I'm letting my Verizon contract run out.

Re: lame verizon phones
Verizon's phones all have the same user interface now, so it'll make little difference whether it's a Moto or an LG or any other brand. All I know is that the first time I dropped my v710 the case cracked and none of my LG's ever do after tumbling to the pavement countless times. They just seem to be made better.

Re: lame verizon phones
I hate the VZW Red interface on their new phones. I had it on my old LG VX7000 and couldn't stand it. Moto's interface, while a little slower, makes way more sense. The LG interface on my VX4400 made more sense too. Verizon should stick to what they know and do well... coverage and reception. Let the phone companies do the interface work.
And I'm still lovin' my E815, by the way. It's not as small as the Razr, but it sure works faster and has more in the brains department.
Nanny, maybe your 710 had some construction defects? I've dropped my 815 about 11 times now and while it's a bit scratched up, it all still works great. Camera and all. It's hit concrete sidewalks, cement garage floors, tile hallways, and cinderblock walls.
