Re: lame verizon phones

Um, as long as you get an unlimited PIX package you can send them (free) to any phone from any carrier Bluetooth or no.  That's how I do it.  The camera takes really good pictures for a device that's a phone first and foremost.  I got used to the size quickly; it's like any other candybar style phone and well worth it for that GORGEOUS screen and keyboard.  Sound is amazing for a portable device.  Highly recommended.

Re: lame verizon phones

Er... it's not just a stupid cell phone? wink

I don't really want to argue against a brand or type of phone that's working for someone. The only thing I have to go off of is that I see a high failure rate of LG vx3100s, LG vx4400s, LG vx6000s and vx6100s and LG vx5550s. We've finally stopped carrying all but the 5550 and 6100, both of which have had less problems overall with the battery mechanism, signal strength, pulling analog when strong CDMA signals are available, quality control with the wiring between the board and the screen, microphones and earpieces going out...

I dunno. Buy insurance.

Re: lame verizon phones

I'd agree that the 6100 was pretty terrible.  The 6000 was bulletproof, as was my 7000.  I'm a big fan of LG phones because they hold up well for me and I torture them.

Re: lame verizon phones

My vx3100 is the greatest phone ever.  It has strong signal and infinate battery life, it just doesn't have any features.

I would get insurane but its so expensive.  Like $10 a month ON TOP OF my current plan.

Re: lame verizon phones

Hey guys...this is my first post here so please...be kind.

My contract with Verizon is almost up and I was thinking of staying with them for the service (I have a good package deal).

But I have no idea what kind of phone to get.  The only feature I really want, need, desire is Bluetooth so I can sync my calendar and contact details. Although it would be nice if it was thin and light.

I'm probably the only person who doesn't care about the camera, games, video, or what not.   lol

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You will probably want a RAZR if size is at all a factor. It's being released soon.  Otherwise, in the Bluetooth enabled arena there's the Samsung SCH-a950 (pretty phone!) and 970, plus a couple of Motorolas and several LGs.  Not caring about high end features is one thing, but any phone with Bluetooth will be in the upper price range for now until all phones have it.

So? Lots of phones aren't on the magic list and there are still workarounds.  Not trying to be a smartass either, but do they put phones that haven't yet been released on that list?  Wouldn't make sense.

Re: lame verizon phones

Actually, I'm a complete smartass and my husband (the real phone guru) makes me look like a dumbass with this stuff.  He's responsible for training the people who do customer service so I often defer to him on these matters.

Verizon does in fact have a lackluster phone selection comparatively speaking.  In my estimation they are an impressive company who respects their employees and it comes through in their treatment of customers.  Every company has business practices that are questionable to the consumer, but even without the employee pricing Verizon would be my cell phone carrier hands down.

And Tessa: check out Verizon's website; they have a good comparison of all available phones.  Then go to a store and check some out.  That's how I fell in love with my 9800.

Re: lame verizon phones

I've not checked, is the Nokia 6255i released for Verizon yet? When I got it through my carrier, it didn't suffer the same hinderances in the Bluetooth arena as my Moto v710 did.

Re: lame verizon phones

Verizon shuts off the bluetooth feature.  The phones are capable of OBEX, but Verizon is stubborn.  I think it has something to do with pleasing the FCC, but I'm not sure.

nannyandnutro:
I agree with you for the most part.  Verizon is great to their customers and employees in just about every aspect.  I also use them for home phone and DSL.  When I needed to install my DSL, the man came right on time.  He was very smart and very efficient.  He was also a very nice person.  We got into conversation and I learned that he loves his job.  He gets treated very well and gets a great salary and great benefits.
Verizon's wireless coverage is the best, which is why I stick with them, I just have yet to come across a FLAWLESS phone from them, hence this topic.  If you really say the 9800 is great, I will look into it, but it looks too fat.

Fido, the 6255i is not yet RELEASED for verizon, but I think they might enable it if you buy it unbranded, which would be very expensive.

Re: lame verizon phones

I feel like a broken record...

The Motorola E815 from Verizon Wireless will work out of the box with iSync's calendars and contacts features. You can hack it via a Windows XP based PC to enable OBEX, allowing you to transfer pictures and ringtones to and from your E815 via Bluetooth.

As far as the new Verizon Razr, I don't know if it'll support iCal out of the box and/or the OBEX hack. Wait till it's released and we'll find out.

It's not because of the FCC, and probably more attuned to these, and other, factors:

1) OBEX enabled means that if you merely want to seamlessly move pix and flix from the phone to a computer, they want it to seem like you need an additional plan on your package in order to move data via their network instead of a node you create on your own, thus, more $$$ for vertical services.

2) They don't want to guarantee and thus, have to troubleshoot a PC to phone connection of any sort.

3) They want to limit their liability on the transferring of copyrighted material from PC to one of their phones, and thus, phone to phone, like an impromptu P2P network.

Re: lame verizon phones

it's official, the V3c is coming out for Verizon tomorrow.  Before I head on down to the store and buy one, I wish to ask what is the difference between the V3c and the regular V3?  or the V3i?

Re: lame verizon phones

For starters, the V3C will be slightly thicker. Not really noticeable, but now that I've told you, maybe. tongue wink

Due to the battery drain of CDMA technologies in general, talk time isn't nearly as long as the original V3. A difference of about 3 hours of straight talk time. That's a pretty big difference. Standby is still as long as the original.

V3C has 60 something thousand colours while the V3 has 252 something thousand. I don't know why the difference.

The V3C offers BREW, GPS tracking, EV-DO. The V3 offers an email client, Java capability, and ringer profiles (I think the reason why this is, is because Verizon's crap interface which will be mandatory on this new RAZR doesn't support it, but I won't know until I play with one).

The Java capability will undoubtedly be offered through a 3rd party, unsupported reload from a carrier like Alltel. At least, that's how it was for the v710.

The V3C also has more onboard memory (30 MB), but no expansion options.

i think that's it.

Re: lame verizon phones

I sell Verizon phones and quite honestly the Razr isn't that great for much other than looks and compactness.  If you can afford to have two phones and switch back and forth between them for special occasions, then get one but otherwise leave it alone.  I carry the e815 and it's fantastic.  The LG 9800 is rather amazing as well, and the 8100 pretty close to it.  If you want a serious phone get one of those three.  As for the advanced stuff, I'd forget the Treo 650 entirely--either get a 600 on teh cheap or wait for the 700--or get the Samsung i730, or the BB 7250 if you want something more compact.

I see all the sh** that happens with phones and people that buy and use them.  The Razr is basically to get in the people that want them and would go to Cingular if we didn't have it.  Period.  It's the phone that gets attention, like the one or two Vipers at a Dodge dealership: not intended for most people but it draws a crowd and those who want what they want and can pay for it get it.

...and FYI the "Unlimited"refers to messaging between Verizon phones only.

Re: lame verizon phones

Screw on the level of professionalism. Checking out those models, the interface that's slapped on all three you recommend makes them really no better than the RAZR, either.

I know I'm looking at a lost cause, but Verizon needs to allow support for Java or just allow the phones to be opened up if it wants to survive.

Google released it's mobile service, for example. Need Java to get it to work. Annoyingly, Verizon is getting left behind.

Personally, I'm probably going to be waiting out for a Motorola Q for my Verizon line later this next year. Let's hope it's not bastardized from it's rumoured specs before then.
