Your casual user (who comprises most of any carriers' base) couldn't care less about all this stuff.

You keep saying that and you know there's no way I can refute it.

Screw on the level of professionalism. Checking out those models, the interface that's slapped on all three you recommend makes them really no better than the RAZR, either.

I know I'm looking at a lost cause, but Verizon needs to allow support for Java or just allow the phones to be opened up if it wants to survive.

Google released it's mobile service, for example. Need Java to get it to work. Annoyingly, Verizon is getting left behind.

Personally, I'm probably going to be waiting out for a Motorola Q for my Verizon line later this next year. Let's hope it's not bastardized from it's rumoured specs before then.

Uhm, actually they're quite different.  First of all, the E815 does not at all have the standard VZW interface at all, but the standard Motorola interface.  The 8100 and 9800 do, BUT the applications for the 9800 are slightly different.  As to the difference between those phones and the Razr, there is significant gain in reception with the three vs. the Razr.  As to exactly which one between the 8100, 9800, and E815 is irrefutably the best in reception, well, it's still up for debate.  People in my area tend to think the 8100, whereas I see lots of people on HoFo swear it's the 815.  As far as mp3 player quality, the LG's tend to beat the 815, and the 9800 easily wins on screen resolution.  The 815's camera sucks but it's there if you want it...to me it's of the least concern.  What does the Razr win on?  Body shape and...and...and...

w00h00! Is that straight across the board? Because the e815 I messed with looked more like my LG 3300 than my Moto v710.

The lack of a damned antenna jabbing you.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the RAZR, but it always feels so weird to not hear someone sucking it up.

Unusual indeed I suppose, but objectivity and anti-hype is my hallmark.  I pick stuff apart so that someone doesn't buy into bullsmurf, get something they'll spend two days liking then two years hating and have me to blame for it.  If anyone anywhere has any problem with something, or a really good experience, I want to know about and my clients to know about it.  In short, I go through the process of buying something myself before selling it to anyone else.

Re: lame verizon phones

Sorry to bring back a quazi-dead thread, but I felt I had to.

I just got home and when I arrived I found my new RAZR V3c.  I've set it up, but I have a few questions on things that my crappy verizon manual seems to have omitted.

1. How can I get the pics I take on my phone onto my mac?  I don't want to have to pay anymore dollars than I already am, especially not for a monthly subscription thing.  I have a miniUSB-USB cable, but it only acts as a charger when plugged into my phone and my mac, not data transfer.  Not even in VPC 7 (XP)

2. This is like the opposite of the other question.  How can I get picson my phone.  It's not something I would do that often, but it would be nice to have like an Apple logo as my background, something I'd get off the internet.

3. How can I get MP3s on my phone.  Can I make them ringtones?

Thanks,
DC

I thought I posted before that according to the website, it didn't have OBEX ? bluetooth, so it didn't support data transfers.

Really cool phone, btw.

Re: lame verizon phones

you're right.  Verizon has never supported OBEX transfers, but I'm talking about wired ones.  Or, if I have to, I think Verizon has a website that allows transferring, like vzwpix.com or something like that, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Sorry - missed that part.  I thought it read you didn't want to buy a cable for some reason.

Here's the weird part:

Everyone keeps saying that Tiger and the RAZR v3 works with iSync over bluetooth.  I don't know if it is a Verizon thing not working, but no one is specifying a carrier.

This person has a modified version of iSync that allows it if it doesn't work out of the box:

Apple has not added support for this phone yet in iSync.

For those who cannot get iSync working with their V3c, below is a modified version of iSync 2.1.1 application including V3c RAZR support. Be sure to backup your iSync by zipping it or copying it to another folder. Then unzip the following file and move the iSync.app to your /Applications folder. Once done, re-pair your BT device and run iSync. Add device in iSync and your V3c should be supported!

Re: lame verizon phones

thanks, but I don't have a bluetooth adapter on my computer.  Besides, Just because iSync supports the V3c doesn't mean that it will support the Verizon one.  THere are other carriers who didn't turn off the OBEX, you know.

But thanks for your help.

Re: lame verizon phones

no, aside from the nokia 6255i, from what I've seen if Verizon kills OBEX, other carriers follow suit. Not because it's in their control, but because Verizon's influence on Motorola on the very schematics of the phone. The v710 is dead in the water for OBEX, for example, while the e815 for any carrier can be hacked.

Re: lame verizon phones

Yes, it's possible.  You need to scoot over to Howardforums and there is a great tutorial in their Verizon phone discussion area.  Basically, you're using a program called Bitpim and a data cable (the latter of which can be found on eBay) It seems complicated at first but once you've done it a few times it's pretty smooth.  I use the same process to put my own (free) ringtones on my 9800; I just use Amadeus to make high quality 30 second clips and voila.

The only problem I can see you running into is bitpim (the data transfer program) not having been updated for the RAZR since it's a pretty new phone.  There should be a pretty meaty discussion going on about it at HoFo by now though.

Re: lame verizon phones

on the RAZR it's fine. usually when we refer to a motorola data cable, it's to a proprietary connector at the bottom of the phone, which you're better off without.

Re: lame verizon phones

ah.  Okay.  Gotcha.  Some guy on howardforums is raving about how he got his vzw razr to work with obex in panther and uses it to transfer pix, flix, tunes and tones.  Any idea how he did this?  I asked him myself and am waiting for a reply.

Yeah for some dumb reason I missed that fact.

As for the transfers, I can only find posts from people on how they got Bluetooth syncing to work - is that what the guy on the other forums is referring to?

It works with iSync apparently.

Re: lame verizon phones

yeah, but I figured out what's going on and I tried it myself.  THe V3c doesn't support Push OBEX, but it does support file transfer from computer to phone.  In other words, unlike most Verizon phones, this one's bluetooth is not fully crippled. My neighbor let me test it out on his 'book that has bluetooth on it and it worked.  I'm gunno go to CompUSA later and pick me up a bluetooth.  Anyone have any suggestions on which one I should get?

BTW, there will be a full review of this phone sometime in the next ten days for any of you interested.  I'm not a great journalist, but for those of you interested in getting this phone, you will be hearing a true recommendation from one mac brutha to anutha.

Re: lame verizon phones

Okay, I went out to compUSA (btw I'm bringing that tread back to life again too) and bought an adapter.  THe BT-120 or whatever it's called.  THe linksys that apple recommends.  I plugged it in and it was plug and play.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that pictures, movies, mp3s, ringtones and all other files were transfered effortlessly via bluetooth to my phone.  Get this phone.

Re: lame verizon phones

I'm ready for the Apple phone, personally. Except for pushbuttons, it should have all the same features as a 1965 black Western Electric desk phone. You dial the right number, you get to talk to somebody. Somebody calls you, you decide whether to talk to them or not. It doesn't need a calendar, calculator, inferior email, crappy internet connectivity, ugly wallpaper, a screensaver, or annoying $1.99 ringtones. And it should sync to my address book via Bluetooth.

Re: lame verizon phones

First of all, I don't care about most of the crap you mentioned, but let's get a few things straight.  I could care less about getting email, internet, my phonebook and a screensaver on my phone.  THe wallpaper is not ugly, since what I use is my own pics I've taken with my own Nikon camera and sized in photoshop to be 176x184.  When viewed on the RAZR screen, it looks very nice.  I transfer pics and mp3s from my computer to my phone via bluetooth.  THe mp3s are either full length for me to listen to from very nice built-in speakers when I don't have my pod with me or they are mp3s that I have sized down to be ringtones at no cost for me.
