The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

I just upgraded to TIGER. I really like it... but why-oh-why does Apple continue to shove the dock down our mouths?

How I pine for the "apple menu". I never accidently launched an ap. while selecting colors in an Illustrator file back then!

Anybody know of a widget that'll work like an apple menu or even the OS 10.1 favorites folder?:confused:javascript:insert_text('confused',%20'');

I instead suggest using either Quicksilver or Spotlight to launch apps. You should get QS, whatever.

Re: The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

1. Apple menu (on-the-cheap): you can add aliases to your Script menu (open AppleScript Utility to configure Script menu) or subfolders inside Script menu.

2. I found moving the Dock to the left side of the screen helps me to not accidentally click it.

The dock is absolutely necessary.
How else would you get bouncing icons as things launched?

Go to Finder, click-and-hold the app icon, and move it up and down when the app is lauunching.

Re: The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

Ya, it really, really sucks how the Dock has seen zero improvements.
I use it for the 20 apps I use most often and then I use Quicksilver for the rest.
That combination works OK I guess but no where near as well as the old pop-up folder windows did.
All in all while I like most of OSX it's UI really falls short of OS9 if you are a user of many applications like I am.
I do alot less drag and dropping then I used to and that makes me sad on a daily basis.
I can't beleive Apple hasn't implimented springloaded folders in the dock. It just seems so God Damn obvious to me.

Re: The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

My solution for the Apple menu is this:

Is System Preferences, make the number of recent applications 50.  This way, all of your frequently used programs are in the Apple menu again.

Either that or download an application to do pretty much the same thing you can accomplish without the application.

Is DragThing still available for OS X?
That's what I used (OS 8.x/0.x/OS X 10.0/10.1)

Re: The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

It works for me. But I'm a incredibly visual person. I tend to digest iconography faster then text and lists.

That being said, I do keep the dock positioned away from pallets and I tend to scale it down quite a bit. It's rare that I accidentally launch an app.  But if I do, I'm a big fan of a quick right-click force quit.

Re: The more I use OS X - the more I hate the dock

I know there are apps out there to "resurrect" the old apple menu, but why would you want to stay in the past?

Two suggestions:
1) Move your dock, (and shrink it a bit)
2) Move your color pallette in illustrator

Oh, and
3) duh...

Ya, thats for sure something I like about Gnome, actually I like most things about Gnome, its a nice DE.
My only big problem with Linux is the yuchy applications, the OS in the form of Ubuntu seems pretty sweet.

Im not going to get in an arguement with the kool-aid drinkers about the Dock/Apple Menu thing.
Most users never really figured out how the Apple Menu worked in the first place so replacing it with something big, dumb, inflexible and easy to use makes sense for the majority.
Those of us who were/are smart enough to figure out the Apple menu are also smart enough to figure out how to make OSX work for us too, no matter how hard Apple tries to make it.

mahakali: That script menu suggestion is golden!
Now that you mentioned it it's one of those forehead smak "Why dident I think of that" things.
Things are looking up smile

Yucky apps aren't the only problem.
Many apps do not print Type 1 outline OTF fonts (fonts with a .otf extension)
TTF outline OTF fonts (which have a .ttf extension) work fine.

AbiWord refuses to even load them (so does OO.o) - they just aren't available. They could, but since they can't correctly print them - they make the right decision to ignore them.

Evolution will load them, and use them on screen - but when you print, you get nothing.
Mozilla will display them on screen, but substitute a different font when you print.

It's a PITA because Linux doesn't render ttf as well as it should (Apple has 3 patents that do not allow fontconfig to use its byte-code ttf interpreter, so all you get is hinting) - and Type1 fonts suck for internationalization.

The .otf fonts are the perfect solution - they render extremely well because no patents get the way, and the work with internationalization extremely well. They just need to fix the smurfing printing.

Putting applications in the Apple Menu: Find the app, make an alias of it, find the Apple Menu folder, drag the alias to it, then edit the name so it doesn't say "alias". You can't drag and drop on it.

Putting applications in the Dock: Find the app and drag it to the Dock. You can drag and drop files on the app icon to open them.

I really like the Dock.

Ya, its fine for 20 applications or so as a launcher. But thats all its good for really. But hey, if youre happy that fine.
Like I said, plenty of ways to get around the limitations Apple has imposed on OSX.
They keep making it dumber, 3rd parties step up and fill in the gaps.
So its all good.
