Civ III : Complete

Aspyr just announced "Civ III : Complete" which is basically Civ III + Play The World.

Reckon that they'll release PTW by itself?
Reckon that they'll fix Civ III itself? Reckon that they'll make that fix available to people unless they buy 'Complete'?

Civ3 Complete is Civ3 + Play the World + the 2nd expansion, Conquests - so the original plus 2 expansions.

Not sure what's "broken" about Civ3, but it's worth pointing out that MacSoft published Civ3 originally. As fate would have it, we can't use the original Mac code, so we're re-porting it from scratch. This means that whatever was "broken" may be fixed - hard to say without more details.

:thumbs-up:
Thanks for all the betas you made (on your own time, if I remember correctly) but they were still buggy in parts (esp. scenarios) as I would expect from betas. Of course, I could be wrong but the latest version I ever found was 1.29b2 [problems with shortcuts under non-standard keyboard layouts, minor patching required to achieve non-standard resolutions etc.]. Whatever. I'd probably be prepared to by Civ III twice to get PTW and Conquests. And there's probably a fair number who will have to have bought it three times.

But there won't be an expansion-only release, right? Like with GOTY?

Currently we only plan to release the complete package.

Re: Civ III : Complete

The only issues I remember with Civ III is that it would be slightly pudgy (even on my 1.5Ghz Powerbook). Other than that, I don't remember any other issues. I kind of missed though all the neato videos and stuff for the council and for the wonders that they had in Civ II.

I'm looking forward to this new Civ III and Civ IV though.

AOE III would be good to see as well...

The "Aspyr" Civ3 will support non-standard resolutions out of the box. If you know of shortcut bugs in the MacSoft release, let us know and I'll gladly double-check them against the Aspyr build. Likewise, if you know of a scenario that had problems with the MacSoft release, let us know.

Good, and most 'MacSoft' releases supported 1440x900, but the betas required a 3rd party utility to use it.

If you know of shortcut bugs in the MacSoft release, let us know and I'll gladly double-check them against the Aspyr build.

Again, only the betas you released to give us some scenario support and bring the game up-to-date with the PC version: using a non-standard keyboard layout meant the game failed to notice key combinations sometimes.

Likewise, if you know of a scenario that had problems with the MacSoft release, let us know.

I'll see if I can find the one I remember. I pretty much gave up on scenarios (Civ III itself had horrific support for scenarios pre-Conquests and load-times for me [1GHz G4, 512MB RAM, 4200RPM HD] were crazy).

Thanks for the [apparent] interest!

Re: Civ III : Complete

Just read the above press release linked above! I'm VERY excited about Civ IV!!! I hate to wait but I'll be first in line for Civ IV! (I'm a die hard Civ II MPG player and never got excited about Civ III).

Aspyr Media just sent word that they plan to bring the latest Sid Meier hit Civilization IV to the Mac early next year. In addition, they will also be publishing Civilization III: Complete for the Mac this December, which brings with it two expansions as well as multiplayer to fans of Civ 3.

Thanks! up

What? I followed most of the reports on the betas, and I don't recall hearing about a third-party utility to use the non-standard resolutions. Can you provide a link?

If you can give a specific example, I'll double-check it ASAP.

Yup. Straight from the thread on CivFanatics about the release of 1.29b2 – http://www.defyne.org/civ3hack/
Works well. shrug

Rarely, a specific key press won't register ; sometimes at the end of turn, [Space] won't work so I just hit [Enter] instead. Occasionally keypad movement won't work (until I say use G to move a unit). This is with a British layout.

Civ3 is Mac-to-Mac only, Civ4 probably will allow PC-to-Mac (ask again in a few months for confirmation).

Seriously, I just want to say how thankful I am that people like Brad and Glenda visit our forums from time to time.  I'm not the biggest game tech expert, but as just your typical gamer, I really appreciate and respect that they can take the time to come around to MAF and answer questions about upcoming titles and previously-released titles (like Brad correcting some misconceptions about Halo a while back).

Well now that I kinda know who you work for (took me long enough! blush ), I have a somewhat general question about DirectX. I gather that this MS proprietary code is the main reason that many games are now difficult to port to the Mac platform and is the principle reason preventing multiplayer games to be cross-platform (Civ III being a prime example; lack of good cross-platform MP is the main reason I never looked at Civ III). Noting that the PC system requirements for Civ IV specify “DirectX 9.0c”, a video card with DirectX8 support and DirectX7 compatible sound card, how can a Mac developer approach writing compatible code? I gather there is no Mac compatible version of DirectX, so I assume that you have to use something completely different, yet still allow them to talk to each other. Can you explain what a possible approach might be? How was MP supported in Civ II MPG? For me, the best thing about Civ II MPG was the ability to literally play with people all across the globe and also use the King’s Chat window to chat between moves; when I was actively playing Civ II, I played with a group of Australians and some guys in Europe on a weekly basis! I’d love to see this functionality in the upcoming Civ IV. I know that’s a big question and you may not be able to explain it in this setting. Thanks for posting in the Mac Addict Forums and keeping us abreast on gaming developments!!
