You can get rid of the garbage 'recording demo' message that appears at the top of the screen by setting cg_recording_statusline to '0' in your configuration files.  This will prevent the demo message from appearing.

Edit:  I'm working with the ETPub team to get the bug fixed.  It is starting to look more and more like a bug with the ET engine and how it runs under Tiger.  The fix I mentioned will also prevent the message from being updated when you are recording a demo.
