Re: Ways to afford a new computer...

I have a job. Putting myself through college and paying bills doesn't leave too much extra monies for computers.

Avid Xpress will work and thanks for the link for cheap ram.

Have a neighbor?  Steal theirs.

Or sell your own kidney on the black market and skip the part with the hooker, motel room and the bath tub full of ice.

Comnsider buying a pre-owned.  I have purchased a pre-owned PowerBook G4 from http://www.macofalltrades.com/.  I also traded my old PowerBook for a new iMac from http://www.powermax.com/.  I have had had no problems with either of these companies.

Of course.  Go steal one in the new Walt Disney Concert Hall.  You can get hundreds, if not thousands of fully loaded Quad G5's

Good artists copy; great artists steal.

Don't forget the Student Developer Discount.  It is a once in a lifetime deal, basically you pay $99 to become a student developer.  As part of the package you get a massive one time discount on an Apple hardware purchase.  The savings on a 15" PB is roughly $500 compared to the standard $200 student discount.   I used it for my G5, I saved about $700.

Could you ellaborate please, this is very intreasting to me.  Thanks a lot:D

Re: Ways to afford a new computer...

Wow, I never expected this thread would still be alive. Basically the easiest way I found is just to save. It's really not too hard once you cut out all the nonessentials, in fact, I'm pretty close to my goal.

Anyway, here's more info on the student developer thing:

Re: Ways to afford a new computer...

Yeah, I checked out the minis. They're pretty sweet, but I think I'd rather save and get soemthing I really want rather than settling for what I can afford. Anyway, just simply saving has proven to be the smartest/easiest way. When I started this topic I was just getting really impatient I guess. Plus, no place was willing to pay top dollar for any of my organs. sad

Re: Ways to afford a new computer...

I'm going to switch to a Mac for my next computer. I have already given up windows (minus the PC I'm on now which is my mum's and I can't do anything to it) and now use Linux which is halfway to MacOS, but for me at the moment; $1,200 is still way more than I want to pay (I paid $400 for my PC from old dead parts which I rung in the companies and got some replace, fried mainboard and other stuff) but I reckon I'll have to. I know that I'm going to get an iPod before a new mac though.  Of course now that they have new chips inside them; it makes it a much better choice.

Re: Ways to afford a new computer...

I sell everything on ebay. it's simple put ANYTHING you find in your apartment on and give ridiculous s&h rates and watch the money roll in.

My powerbook is 3 years old, however i am in a VERY fortunate position where the government will but me a new one next year. Yayyy!!!
