Question about a plural
With the release of the Xbox 360, I thought it would be appropriate to determine whether the plural would be Xbox 360s, or Xboxes 360.
Give me your input.

Damn you. Damn you for making me think about this. It would never have occurred to me.

Xboxes 360 is more correct. Xbox 360s will be common use, you just know it.

No. If you have several copies of Tekken 4 you don't have Tekkens 4. If you have a Weedwhacker 48, plural becomes Weedwhacker 48s not Weedwhackers 48.
"After all, it's not that awful, in Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Are you sure?
If you answer yes, you're sure, I can only plead that I'm a victim of studying too many other languages at the moment - take on too many at once and you wind up speaking none of them well.

Re: Question about a plural
360 is part of the name.
You wouldn't call them "colors pencil" or "PowerBooks G4," would you?

Toyotas Camry?
iPods nano?
Holys Bible?
Canons PowerShot?
Goldens Graham?
Your examples are more general identifiers. "XBox 360" is collectively a proper noun. Simply compare "XBox 360" to another name of a very similar form. Would you say, "PowerMacs G5?"

Re: Question about a plural
I was pointing out that there are other terms that do follow that convention, not saying it's correct in this instance. I don't really care what you call it.

Re: Question about a plural
I think it has to do with which object is being added to. For example, colored pencil, the pencil is being added upon, so we say, "Colored pencils." But in Xbox 360, we are adding another Xbox, so we say, "Xboxes 360." 360 is an adjective in this instance, I think.

With "Xbox 360," you're not adding another "Xbox." You're adding another "XBox 360." Again, would you say, "PowerMacs G5?"

Ya, but the full product names is "Xbox 360"
For example, let's pretend you have a lame generic name like Jim Smith. If you were standing next to someone else with the exact same name we'd refer to you two as "the Jims," "the Jim Smiths," or "the Smiths."
But we'd never refer to the two of you as "the Jims Smith"

Re: Question about a plural
It's simple when you think about it. The "s" or what have you goes at the end of a given name when converting the singular into the plural. "Best" is not the name. "Best Buy" is the name. Put the "s" at the end of the name.
