When will OS X 10.5 be released?

I saw some bad reviews for 10.4 on the Mac.com site. I own a dual-G4 450 Powermac. I do video editing with Final Cut pro 3, and DVD Studio Pro 2. I understand I will have to upgrade everything if i go to 10.5. Is that true?

Thanks -

I'm waiting for the mactel. I'm trying to avoid upgrading everything until then. Do you have any idea how the new pc's will be priced?

Re: When will OS X 10.5 be released?

customer reviews perhaps. But 10.4 is a great OS. I have no idea why anyone would give it a bad review. I don't really see what 10.5 could offer that would blow 10.4 out of the water, which 10.4 did for 10.3, but Apple is full of surprises.

I would expect all new PCs to be priced the same or slightly lower than how they are now. Do not expect Apple to use cheap chips to drive down costs. Apple = quality. Expect the prices to reflect that.

If Mactels are released in early 2006 they'll come with 10.4.x

Re: When will OS X 10.5 be released?

I thought that was strange, to see such negative reviews on Mac's own site. It seemed to me it was that using old software is a problem. Video editing software is not cheap to upgrade.

i would expect the new chip to be pricy, but not outrageous. Apple does need to drive prices down a little, or PC's are going to blow them out of the water eventually.

That logic would work if it wasn't for the fact that Apple is gaining market share and all...

Not to mention, price comparisons are tired and irrelevant, because they are always comparing dis-similar machines.  Apple does not make cheap, low-end crap.  If you want to compare Apple's offering to that, you should stop now and just go by a cheap, low-end PC.  If you want to make an accurate comparrison, you will usually find the Mac to only be marginally more expensive, a fact that is easily made up for by the quality of the included OS and software.

i'm not going to argue the point (because i don't want to seem like an ass), but i've been with .Mac for almost 3 years now and have never seen a review portion of the site. is there one?

(and yes, i am seriously asking. if there is one, i would love it.)

My first guess would be that it's http://homepage.mac.com/someusername

But that's just a total guess.

BTW, the only rumor I've read about 10.5 is that the finder would be rewritten and based on spotlight, which could be very interesting if done well..

Czachorski sounds somewhat partial toward Macs. I'm not as beholden to them. My experience with Macs has been mediocre at best - because I'm not as familiar. Therefore, I prefer PC's over Macs any day for most everyday applications; but I love Final Cut Pro! You are actually right about the price comparisons with pc's, especially when you consider the price of the dual xeon monsters.

Re: When will OS X 10.5 be released?

10.5 will be released between end of 2006 and early 2007. 10.4 is a great OS but IMO it's not as compelling as 10.3 over 10.2. Dashboard is probably the only new feature that I miss when using Panther.

It's probably some customers reviews at Apple store online.

Bah, The only thing that makes Macs compelling is the software. Mac hardware is alot more expencive than comparibly proforming PCs until you get to the very high end.

No, Apple hardware is designed in a way that makes a lot more sense.  Try finding a notebook like the PowerBook in terms of size and power.  Dell's powerful notebooks are 2+ inches thick.  The D810 I'm typing on at the moment is a honkin' brick.

You have got to be kidding.
In particular Apple laptops are getting their butts kicked by the Intel based offerings.

For now.  And only because of the long-in-the-tooth G4.  Apple's design and their software and their OS are far, far superior than anything Dell can offer.  Throw an intel in their next year, and if I am Dell, I am worried.

Performance laptops are a lot bigger I will give you that...however Apple's laptops get a through but whippen by the performance laptops and a moderate but whippen by the others.  A top of the line Pentium M will smoke a 1.67 Powerbook in performance and battery life.

For now.  Apple has an answer.

What is Dell's answer going to be for their poor design?  Do they have a plan?  I doubt it.

Yes, I am very partial to them.  The entire experience with them just clicked with me.  For me, I wouldn't use the word 'beholden', but more like 'thankful' or 'fortunate'.  'beholden' is a term that reminds me of how I felt towards PCs.

Price is a nebuleous beast.  That was my point.  The actual words that bugged me were:

Apple does need to drive prices down a little, or PC's are going to blow them out of the water eventually.

PCs are blowing Macs out of the water right now when it comes to price.  I am a firm believer that you-get-what-you-pay-for is usually correct.  So I don't think that Apple needs to lower prices.  If PCs continue to suck and worsen the user experience, it might actually be to Apple's advantage to be more expensive.
