Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

Hello. At home I've got a G3 iMac running at 350MHz with 320MB of RAM and a 40GB HD (with roughly 1GB left on the OS X partition). It has 10.3.9.

At work there is an eMac running at 800MHz with 128MB of RAM and around 28GB of free disk space. It has 10.3.2.

The eMac feels slow in response. It feels like it's working at the same speed as the G3 iMac!

Is this simply due to the 128MB of RAM in the eMac? Shouldn't it be faster with more than twice the processing power, even though it has less RAM?

I thought maybe it would be the HD, but I'm sure they would put a 7200 RPM drive in the eMac... right? I forget what the iMac came with, but I upgraded the HD and that one is 7200 RPM.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

128MB of RAM is still not enough. get at least 256 more. also, do a restart. see if that helps.

512 is optimum.

dude, 1GB is no where near enough space for yer mac to be happy! always keep at least 50% of yer total HD (OS partition) space free for yer OS and apps to be happy.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

Haha, I know. 1 GB isn't good. But right now the iMac works fine. The reason I said that was to show that the eMac still works slowly even with a lot of GBs of HD space free.

I'm going to get a PowerBook within a few months, whether that'll be Intel or PPC is up to Apple, so then I'll move my stuff onto it. That would clear up enough space (there are other users).

But back to the eMac.

Actually, before the eMac was running 10.2. I thought maybe it was the OS (because the iMac worked much faster on 10.3 when I updated it when 10.3 came out). So I put 10.3 on the eMac, but it still does the same thing.

I suggested that they get some more RAM for the eMac. It's deffinetly not the most important computer in the company, so I doubt they'll put it up to 512 MB. Although RAM isn't that expensive anymore, so maybe.

But let's say I give it 256MB of RAM at least and it's still slow in response. What could that mean?

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

I had 3 eMacs all of which came with 128 MB of RAM.  I spent $30 on some RAM and brought it to 256.  It was like a whole new machine.

Trust me it will work.  I would go so far as to recommend whoever is using the machine to spend the $30 and do it themselves.  Mind you that $30 was about 2 years ago, so I'm sure RAM prices are even cheaper now.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

...50% is a little steep. As long as there's a few gigs free you should be good. And this isn't just about "speed". Weird smurf happens when you get low on disk space. Like, lost/corrupt data type weird smurf.

But as for the real problem, it's gotta be the RAM. I wouldn't OS X with less than 512MB on ANY machine. Tho, 256 might might be acceptable for web and email use only.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

So it's most likely the RAM then. Alright, I'll tell them to get some more. It shouldn't cost more than $50, I'd say.

Does anyone know of the fastest way to backup data without FireWire or USB 2?

This iMac has USB 1 and only an external CD-RW (connected via USB 1 so it's limited to 4x).

I'd like to backup all of the user folders so I can merge the two partitions. That would increase space on the OS X side.

If 10/100 Ethernet is faster than USB 1, is there some way to connect a HD through Ethernet?

Yeah, ethernet would be faster than USB but you'll need to attach the HD to another computer or get a network storage unit to use it.

It is faster and possible, but also not cheap.  Lacie makes one:

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Though I'll probably end up just connecting the HD to the new PowerBook (whenever that will be) and do it that way.

Or maybe there's a cheap Ethernet-connected USB hub thing.

But anyway.

I've never done this before and I've always been a little confused when doing Sharing stuff with OS X.

When the HD is connected to the PowerBook via USB 2, and the PB to the iMac via Ethernet, is it possible to see that HD on the iMac?

And on a seperate topic... is it possible to just share an entire HD with 2 computers connected via Ethernet? I mean, say the iMac and another iMac are connected via Ethernet... is there just some way to look at iMac 2's HD from iMac 1? I remember something like that using Classic where you just say "Share this volume" or whatever.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

When my computers tend to slow down rather suddenly, it's usually a sign of pending hard drive failure. I would say backup, even for nothing more than good luck.

Re: Weird eMac slowness..... RAM?

hmmm.... it is a good idea to backup occasionaly. Though I don't think the eMac just suddenly started slowing down.

They said it was a bit weird from the beginning. It's probably the RAM.
