Is there a good racing game for Mac?
I like Gran Turismo and Colin McRae in the Playstation. I have an eMac 1.42 Ghz, 64 MB vram, 256 MB ram (plan to upgrade). So, can I race in my Mac?

Didn't Aspyr port some Nascar game a while back? It's got real good physics, I hear.

Somebody should port that to OS X.

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
Colin McRae 05 will be out early next year.
Although this platform lacks games in general, this is especially true for racing sims. There are some older Nascar racing sims, but if you ask me, Nascar is a bore and it's and even more boring video game.
Colin McRae 05 is probably the best WRC sim... and WRC is a hell of a lot more enthralling then stupid Nascar. However, you seem to already own the game

Yes, they do. Papyrus was the best racing sim developer ever. They're gone now.

Feral has also recently published F1 Championship, Ford Racing 2 and Total Immersion Racing.

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
Jammin' Racer isn't exactly childish -- it's a kart racing game, basically. Very, very well done, too -- runs great and supports gamepads, as well as two-player split-screen play on the same computer. Loads of fun, if a bit small.
F1 Championship Season is very long in the tooth now, but it's still fun if you want to do some open wheel racing. As an alternative you can check out Virtual Grand Prix 2 from Virtual Programming Ltd. Ford Racing 2 is a straight up port of the console game. Total Immersion Racing is fun because the computer-controlled drivers remember you from race to race and hold grudges if you do things like run them off the road or push them into walls. (F1, TIR and FR2 are all from Feral Interactive.
There's also the very wonky Racer, a free race car simulator, and Redline, coming one of these days from Ambrosia Software.

If you want to try out any Feral racing games you can download demos and try them out on your Mac:-
Ford Racing 2 Demo
Formula 1 2000 Demo
Total Immersion Racing Demo
And we have a mini-site with the current details on Colin McRae 2005 here.

Sorry you didn't like it, that's why we have a demo so everyone can try it out and make up their own mind about it. It is more of an arcade racer than a simulator.

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
I would recommend Total Immersion racing.
It's a bit more arcady, but the graphics are pretty good, and the physics are OK.
I do like how the AI will track grudges through the ranks... sometimes against you, sometimes to your benefit. (Its pretty funny to watch 2 cars pummelling each other all over the road right behind/infront of you).
The graphics are ok as well, though the higher end features can really hurt performance on older rigs (See my sig for what I run it on).
F1 championship is crap... mostly... Especially the assistive braking and steering (esentially, all you ahev to do is hold the accelerator down and the car will drive itslef... LAME!), of course you can turn this off, but it makes for one hell of a difficult racing experience (I stopped playing the game after about an hour).
If you have the playstation... get Gran Turismo 2 (one of my all time favorites), if you have the PS2, Gran Tourismo 3 and 4 are great, plus 3 is on the cheap now that 4 is out (I bought it for 4.99 a few weeks back since i loaned someone my GT4 disk).
If you have an XBOX, FORZA is all I can say. I started about 2 weeks ago with it, and I love it just as much as the Gran Tourismo Series (actually a little bit more since there is accurate damage modelling, which not only affects the appearence of the cars, but their handling as well. Also, can anyone say Ferrari?).
Just depends on what you like really... As far as technical driving sims, only F1 Championship (CRAP!) and Nascar (OK) are the competitors here... But for fun I'd recommend Total Immersion.
Anywho... thats my 2¢

You know, I may be thinking of Virtual Gran Prix in place of F1 championship, I'm not entirely sure.

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
Hey dcalfine, calm down man. You're talking to Edwin S., a big wig from Feral (the company that ported the game you're bashing). If you didn't enjoy it, that's fine, but please try to not get snippy with one of their guys.
Just as Ed said, everyone's entitled to an opinion, and to help people educate people on which games are right for them, Feral is kind enough to offer demos of their games. If you play it and don't like it, at least it saved you some money by getting the demo first.
Not to say that your personal review doesn't have its merits; I always look at gamer reaction to a game before investing in it myself. I'm just saying to try to keep cool around the pros. If you didn't like the gameplay, you could always offer reasons why you didn't like it, or even ways you think it could've been better. Constructive criticism always goes over better than "what you put a lot of work into really sucks", you know what I mean?

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
Perhaps it would be best to compliment the work done on making the Mac port of Ford Racing play just like all the other versions. Just omit the fact that all the other version of the game are total garbage. The PS2 version is marked down to $5.99 CANADIAN at Wal-Mart, and it STILL doesn't sell. I think that says a lot right there.

Ambrosia has their 'perpetually in development' game Redline coming up at some point in the future. I think it's been in beta now for... quite some time...

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
Yes, I would agree that Ford Racing 2 isn't the best racing game, and its sales reflect that. My experience is that, when companies that don't make games try to get their name slathered onto a game, it doesn't do as well as its competitors. Hopefully it'll do decently on the Mac, though.

Re: Is there a good racing game for Mac?
I don't have any suggestions, but just wanna share an experience. A few years back (which seems like half a lifetime to me) my sister for some reason, as she doesn't use her computer for gaming, bought Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit for 15 bucks and installed it on her CompUSA PC. Whenever she left for various SAT preps and whatnot I always got on her computer and played NFS III. Man, I absolutely LOVED those sessions. Goodness..

my bust. I thought I was bashing Ford (as in the big, American company that makes unreliable cars), not an actual person. I apologize sincerely.
Ed, think of what I have to say as constructive criticism.
As I've stated, the graphics are great and, if the game was released today, it could pass the graphics test. The gameplay didn't "suck" as I stated earlier, but it wasn't thrilling. It seemed too simplistic. I wish there had been more to the game than just 'be the first person to reach the finish line in this highly-realistic environment." The different cars looked cool and all and there was definitely a definitive difference between the low-end cars and the beefy ones, but I wish there was like an auto shop, where you could buy new parts. Also, I wish there was like powerups along the way that could give you boosts. And why does this game have to be in a closed course? Why not have maps/tracks that are on real city streets, so people can, say, spot their building in LA or New York while playing the game. Then you should have other cars on the road, some civilians (who you lose points if you run them over) and most of all, cops. All good racing games need cops. There. I hope that compensates for what I said.
btw ics, how did you know what he did for a living? How much do you know about me? What am I doing right now?
