ipod video exporting help

Hey, i just got a 30GB video ipod for christmas and i want to start putting family guy episodes on to it. Now i have already ripped the video_ts from the dvd, converted that to mp4, and now i am using Quicktime pro 7 to export the mp4 to my ipod. It starts working and that it just pauses, and pauses and pauses. Its been in the same spot for about 10 minutes now, Ive cancelled and currently trying to do it again, but the same problem is arising. It starts off very fast and does about {         } right away, then stays there. Does this just take a long time? Or is something wrong here?

I have noticed that the timer bar on QT seems to be a little screwed up lately.  Give it a little more than 10 minutes, and see if it continues.  Depending on the speed of your machine, it might take as long as 2x3 times playing time to make the conversion.

Re: ipod video exporting help

On my dual 867 G4, which will probably be pretty close to your 1.2 G4, I get about 2-3x times movie length when ripping from video_ts folders on DVD to mpeg4 with handbrake and single-pass encoding.  So expect about 2-3 times playing time, or thereabouts.

I may have mis-read your original post - you already did the conversion to mpg4, and it is hanging when trying to movie it to your iPod?  Is QT the right app for that?  Or is that designed to be done in iTunes?  I have no idea.

Re: ipod video exporting help

I have a 1.33 GHz PB - ripping from an HD, I let it go over night.  Honestly, if the first Intel Mac (hopefully mini) rips faster, I'll be first in line.

I think your terminalogy is confusing us a little.  Ripping usually means converting from the source media to a compressed copy.  I think you mean you are copying the already ripped file to your iPod, right?  If that is the case, then it is indeed a little odd that it would hang after 10 minutes.  Are you sure that QT is the correct program for that, or is that supposed to be done in iTunes?  Since I don't have a video iPod, I am just not sure.

Re: ipod video exporting help

I'm doing an "Export" from .mov to iPod m4v and it's taking forever!  The source file is full quality .mov from iMovie and it's 2:44 in length.  Geez, what's with the slow exporting (I'm running an 867 with 640 RAM, QT Pro 7.0.3)

I guess it's just the way it's going to be until I upgrade to a faster processor?

peace

Re: ipod video exporting help

Once I rip the Video_TS folder from the disc, how do I convert to m4v? I have QTPro 7. smile

Is there a way to do this without Handbrake?

Thanks so much!

Re: ipod video exporting help

this is how i put videos onto my ipod....
Step 1. Instert DVD into Burner and open Mac the Ripper
Step 2. Rip the DVD using Mac the Ripper (should take about 20-30 minutes for a full length movie)
Step 3. Convert the Video_TS folder into an .mp4 using Handbrake. (Takes me overnight to do it)
Step 4a. Convert the .mp4 to the ipod format using iSquint. (Takes about 20-30 minutes for me to do one episode of family guy)
Step 4b. You can also using Quicktime Pro 7 to convert the .mp4 to your ipod video file but it takes FOREVER!!. iSquint is definatley the way to go. www.isquint.org

Re: ipod video exporting help

Here's how I do it:

Use HandBrake, and follow the directions on this page (download link is is there as well):
http://howto.diveintomark.org/ipod-dvd-ripping-guide/
Be sure to change the "Picture Settings" to the 320 width

Then hook up your iPod, open iTunes, and drag the file that HandBrake created to your iPod within iTunes.  Quite simple.

I'm on a G4 12" 1GB, and it takes about 1 for 1 amount of time on HandBrake.  The iTunes copy is quite speedy.

Re: ipod video exporting help

I just heard of a new one.  I personally love it because it works, it is fast, it does h.264, and copies it over to the iPod w/o the need to have it in iTunes first - which is a big plus for me being as I have  PB with an 80 GB hard drive:
