What happens if he dies?

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in critical condition following massive stroke

The timing couldn't be worse. Just recently, Sharon split his ruling Likud Party by walking out and starting his own centrist party (there was massive resistance in Likud to Sharon's Palestinian policies). At that time, the centrists were definitely in the ascendency.

But with him out of the picture, what's gonna happen?

And as if it wasn't complicated enough, they're in a countdown to spring election. Is the extremist right, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, set for a comeback? If so, prepare for a war with Iran (and God knows who-all else).

If not, will there be a period of political instability in Israel, with no party able to form a lasting government?

Stay tuned.

The same thing that happens if he lives.  Sharon likely isn't gonna be in any shape to run much more than a vacuum cleaner after this.

Re: What happens if he dies?

As if on cue, Pat Robertson already has already come up with something vile and disgusting to say:

The Reverend Pat Robertson says Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's massive stroke could be God's punishment for giving up Israeli territory.

The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network told viewers of "The 700 Club" that Sharon was "dividing God's land," even though the Bible says doing so invites "God's enmity."

Robertson added, "I would say woe to any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course."

He noted that former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated.

Robertson said God's message is, "This land belongs to me. You'd better leave it alone."

Link.

Re: What happens if he dies?

Well, I'm really not as tuned into domestic Israeli politics as perhaps I should be but my first thought is that, in forming a centrist party, obviously that didn't come about out of thin air.  It already has a lot of members that have switched to it, no?  I think that at least for the next election they'll still make a go of it.  If it doesn't end up being effective it will revert back to the old Likud/Labor stuff.

I don't think the center party would have come into being without some good polling.  Otherwise no one would have felt comfortable joining even if they agreed with the idea.  Anyway, sounded good to me.

I agree with you.

People like Pat Robertson try to emulate the prophets of old by linking tragedy with punishment.
What they don't seem to understand - the prophets of told almost always said so before the punishment - not after the fact, and they almost always offered a message of hope in conjunction - not just random doom and gloom.

Pat Robertson is off of his rocker.

Re: What happens if he dies?

I'm not tuned into this either, but re: Schnicky's comment about Netanyahu, I do remember when Clinton was President and he tried so hard to get a peace agreement between Arafat and Netanyahu, Netanyahu remarked about Clinton, "This man is a warrior for peace." It didn't work out that way, but I don't think this Israeli is the hardliner many think he is.

Now that Arafat is gone and if Sharon dies (old hard headed enemies) the young moderates may be able to come to some kind of sensible agreement. It sure would take a lot of the pressure cooker mentality out of the middle east.

As for Robertson, he's becoming senile. Time for the 700 Club to get new leadership.

Re: What happens if he dies?

Well, sharon's new party was predicted to do well in the upcoming elections.  Hopefully this attitude will remain, even without Sharon.

It seems as if a majority of Israelis agree with disengagement from the Palestinians.

And thats why I smurfing hate people like pat robertson. They care more about the amount of land Israel controls than 90% of jews. I, like many jews, believe its good that Israel has been returning land. Peace is the goal, not perpetuating violence. Anyways, Pat only wants Israel to hold that land so that 'come the apocolapse, they can have all of us in one spot so that it is easier for us to convert or go to hell. roll

Israelis don't care what Pat and the 700 Club want.  They just want the dispensationlists' money.

I'm still not convinced Sharon's motives were pure.

Well, that's certainly a concern.  I don't trust him a whole hell of a lot, either.

I am so glad that Pat Robertson is around to tell us what God thinks.  It must be nice to have a direct telepathic link with the Supreme Being.

I wonder to what Robertson would attribute Sharon actually recovering.

Re: What happens if he dies?

You'd think that after creating this entire planet, that God would want more than a relatively small parcel of land in the desert.  Just sayin'.

We'll have to see who replaces him.  Even still, the outcome of the Palestinian elections will have more impact on the peace process.  If Abbas is removed, there may no longer be one.  In any case, work on the barrier will likely continue and more than likely, Israel will simply ignore the Palestinians.  Hopefully the new Kadima party has another person ready to take the reins.

If you read the old testament - things are done so that all the nations will glorify him, not just Israel.
Israel is the land given to Abraham, but God owns all the cattle on all the hills - and the hills. The entire earth is described as his footstool. etc.

Well, I don't think the party matters as much as the person.
