Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?
Don't get me wrong... great specs and all, but
MacBook Pro sounds so clunky. Powerbook was one word at least.
What other names can we creative people at MacAddict think up of?
Dual 2.0 GHz G5 PowerMac running Tiger
400 MHz Lombard G3 PowerBook running Panther

PowerBook has mindshare, a nice ring to it AND is appropriate.
(the first powerbooks shipped with 680x0 processors not PowerPC - so theres no reason to claim that it wouldn't fit with the intel architecture change)

I hope they switch back to 'iBook' and 'PowerBook'. But they won't.
Meh. The IR sensor is ugly even if the iSight isn't too bad.

I think they are just capitalizing on the name recognition of mac. People may not know right off the bat that "powerbook" is made by apple.
And yes, I dislike the name. But the specs rock. I bet they sell the ever loving smurf out of these things.

This is GREAT news!
Apple did it right, release pb replacement now since current G4 PB is so badly outdated!
this is the laptop I been waiting for the day I sold my tibook yrs ago hoping for a G5 pb(in term of performance).
Remember in the past, Apple always have those graph saying _x faster then wintel in this and that benchmark, how many X faster is Apple claiming their new MacBook Pro as compare to current G4 pb? 4x? amazing
I will put my order in as soon as I get home tonite, this is a great move/product for Apple!

Really, who gives a smurf what they call them. Although I am skeptical of their performance claims. The new iMac by what Apple says would be faster than a 2Ghz DP PowerMac G5.... I seriously doubt that.
I'll wait for Barefeats to do the real benchmarks with them.

Bitching? I for one would be ECSTATIC. I view the move to the x86 architecture as a tragedy, a failing on the part of the old AIM alliance, the beginning of the end for Apple. If they hadn't released these today I wouldn't have anything at all to bitch about.
HOWEVER they DID release new product - and I find it lacking.

PowerBook was a brand name. But since it is tremendously faster, how is Apple goingn to sell off the remaining G4s. Will they offer massive discounts?

It's a bad name. They are trying to differentiate it with the old Motorola-based computers but I think it's a bad choice. Customers don't need to know that anything is different.
Call it a PowerBook or an iBook. Those names are cool. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

They changed it when it used a PowerPC to PowerBook, so it is only appropriate to change it again. CoreDuoBook? IntelBook? IntelBook Pro?
Mac Book Pro sounds better than anything else (given they had no choice really but to change it).

The Intel Core Duo, as they call it, clocks similar to the 2GHz DP G5. It wouldn't have to be much faster per cycle to out-do the G5. The G5 has a faster FSB, but it's still using the same memory.
