Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

I give it a week until someone starts making 'PowerBook' or 'Intel PowerBook' stickers!

No FW800, hmm. Guess I was right on the money when I bought my new FW400 case.

Still I'm considering selling my 'Powerbook' (Pismo) my Cube and my G4 Quicksilver for one of these babies...assuming it will run Windows when I get the Urge...

The Intel Core Duo, as they call it, clocks similar to the 2GHz DP G5.  It wouldn't have to be much faster per cycle to out-do the G5.  The G5 has a faster FSB, but it's still using the same memory.

About the only thing I think the Core Duo will beat the Dual Core G5 on is integer performance.  It is well known that Intel likes to run those integer units real fast (last I did some research they were clocking them 2x the core clock)

Barefeats will have their hands on one soon enough.

They will make a PCIexpress slot FW 800 adapter.

PCMCIA or Cardbus are the proper names of the slot.  Does anyone know if this is a 32-bit or a 64-bit slot? Its makes a world of difference for FW800 and SATA adapters.

Uhhh, read the specs again, there is no PCMCIA or Cardbus.  It is now a ExpressCard/34 slot like what was mentioned above.

Apparently its actually Expresscard - not PCMCIA or Cardbus - see http://www.expresscard.org for info.

It looks like the card slots themselves are intended to link to the motherboard via either a PCIexpress bus or USB2, heres hoping that apple is running the ec34 slot on the MacBook Pro via PCIexpress.

Unfortunately I still haven't found a FW800 ExpressCard adapter in the 34 mm configuration. All the one's I've seen have been the EC54 card - which is too wide for the EC34 slot sad... I wonder if someone will come up with an extender to attach ec54 cards to ec34 slots...

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

as much as i love the name powerbook, i do think the change to intel initiates a name change.

had been given the chance, i would have voted for "Mach Book"

but really it is just a name. shrug

It's not so much that MacBook is so terrible, but why did they have to throw away an excellent name like "Powerbook"?

Dell, Sony, or any computer manufacturer would kill to have a name like that.

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

Name stupid, even just dropping the "Pro" helps.

And for those that were asking, the original PowerBooks were the PowerBook 100, which used a 68000 processor, and the PowerBook 140 and PowerBook 170, which used 68030 processors.  So the name PowerBook preceeds the introduction of the PowerPCs.

Incidentally, after the introduction of the Power Macs (and before the PowerPC PowerBooks), someone joked "Would a book about new PowerPC-based PowerBooks be called a Power PowerBook book?"

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

MacBook is a great name. It simplifies things for the 90% of computer users that don't use MacOS. They call their laptops notebooks. MacBook tells you that it's not a PC. It really is just the first Intel book so it's nothing special interms of where it will place in the full line of MacBooks to come. Apple laptops have been sucking for over a year now so at least we can all move on.

If you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.

Care to make it interesting? wink  Anandtech is saying that the Duo is overall about the same clock-for-clock as the X2 - Sometimes a little faster, sometimes a little slower, but never by a significant amount.  ...But we shall see.

I don't associate the Powerbook with the Power PC processor.  I associate it with Apple.  I really like the name Powerbook. MacBook Pro just doesn't roll off the tongue the same way.

But hey, it's just a name, right?

Blech, Mac Book. Ewwwww!!! Worst name ever!!! Who wants to go up to their friends and say, "hey look at my new Macbook Pro." Come on, it just sounds childish and wrong for a pro level machine. Guess I spend more money on PC parts now and upgrading my Cube. With each Apple update i'm liking their hardware less and less.

Are you kidding me?  You would actually base your decision to buy or not buy over the name?  Wow.  Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Colors were bad. Remember?

Macbook isn't too horrible... but. I think of Mac as meaning "pro", tho, so it sounds like a double positive in my head. I wouldn't like them to drop the iBook line, as they were the laptop versions of the iMacs. That name needs to stay.

I wonder what the new desktop towers are going to be called. Powermac doesn't change to Macmac too well...

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

I thought the colored Macs perpetuated the idea that Macs are not serious computers.  They were cool and all, but the thing that made me not like it was the fact that a "colorless" option was not available.

Apple considered SuperMac, but that name is already trademarked by Power Computing who will likely use it in their new line of clones.

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?

I just figured it out.  Apple is going to kill the iBook and change Power Mac to Mac Pro.  They didn't want to loose the brand association with either laptop so they went down the middle.  MacBook sounds kinda like iBook, and the Pro badge make it sound (a little) more like PowerBook.  Here's the new product line:

iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro.

The new pro desktops will be called the MacDaddy.

If they were really after name association, they would have called them PodBook Pros.
