Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?
Yeah, I think MacBook Pro ain't the best name possible, but they couldn't call it the "iBook" could they? (iBook = intelBook)
I'd love one, but at 2300.00 $$ CAD, I don't think so. If they make an intel iBook like machine I'd buy it if it shipped with an actual video processor, instead of the rubish the PPC ones come with.

Yeah, all the whiney bitches, in this forum should be the metric all decisions are made from.
If your a Mac Fan you are not the marketing target really, you've been sold, and will buy an Apple Laptop even if it is the iFlungPoo Pro Extreme . . . sure you'll bitch all the way to the Apple store but . . .

I know more about the reaction I've seen to the name in this forum than they do. I guess it takes a Master's degree to come up with a name that most Mac fans think is bad.
They aren't targeting Mac fans with the name. Most mac fans would still get a laptop with those specs (assuming they could afford it) even if it was called "superbook power pro ultra to the max x2". They are going after people who don't even realize that the company is Apple, not "MAC".

It's a stupid name. I don't need a degree to hold that opinion. You can disagree with me, but I'm not going to change my opinion.

MacBook is too soft. It's more suitable for replacing iBook (I personally find iNames is aging, btw). Maybe average home PC users will find it more 'approachable' than PowerBook, but will average home PC users be willing to shell out 2 grands++ for a computer?

I'll come up with a better name if I get the salary the guy who came up with MacBook Pro gets.
Don't attribute that statement to me. I replied to it, pointing out that many of us have already offered a better name: PowerBook.

Re: Anybody else think MacBook Pro is a dumb name?
Ok it's painfully obvious that they had to change the name b/c they are phasing out the name iBook. So you have MacBook and MacBook Pro. Therefore, with the old name Powerbook out of the picture, can any of you think of a better name for them to use instead while you say how stupid the new name is? Please I think 6 pages of "It's stupid" is enough.

I'm fond of the name Powerbook, because it's familiar, but is it honestly better?
Imagine that the MacBook Pro had been around for 14 years and a new "Powerbook" was announced this week. We'd probably be seeing the exact same complaints.

Why do people say Mac is soft compared to Power, it has always been fine for describing the top of the line desktops but attached to book it's all of a sudden a sissy toy name? Sheesh.
Mac is a tough guys name, or the name of a truck like in Mack.
Edit: Fixed punctuation.

Apple opted with "Mac" as opposed to "Power" because it is a much stronger brand name. This is a pretty common move with rebranding work.My firm does stuff like this all the time. Steve actually mentioned why they moved to "Mac" during his keynote. They rebranded because they wanted to make a distinction between the architecture, and because they wanted to highlight the Mac brand.
You want to have a brand that's familiar with as many people as possible. Moreover, this can be tricky with professional products since they don't have a broad audience like consumer products.
Outside of the Mac community, more people are familiar with the "Mac" brand as opposed to the "Powerbook" or "Powermac" brands.
I think it was a fairly smart branding decision, yet MacBook definitely doesn't sound as cool as Powerbook
I'll probably still call the thing a Powerbook for the next 2 years... partially due to laziness, and partially due to protest.

I'm going to guess the desktop line'll be:
iMac Express [Mac mini]
iMac Pro [iMac]
iMac eXtreme [PowerMac].

I was seriously asking why the Powerbies™ keep crying and saying the name MacBook is soft when Mac has been and will be the most recognized and widely used name for all Apple computers. Now all of a sudden it is weak? You are preaching to the choir. I have liked the name since the Keynote.

I can. But, why should I work for free? The man or woman who came up with MacBook Pro gets a salary. If Apple were to hire me today, I'll come up with a better name.

Work for free? Are you kidding? You must be kidding. If you haven't thought of a name by now, after their name was released, and so much time has passed, I'd hardly call it work. Admit it. You can't think of anything. And you want a salary based on some imaginary guy who "thought" of the name? Americans are so stupid.

Maclaptop
Wait... I think we used to have someone here who may own that name...
* Apple BookMac (doesn't sound any better in reverse)
* Apple Models #MA090LL and #MA091LL (ooh! catchy PC-esque names!)
* Apple iBook... well, this time the i is for Intel
* Apple Mac-To-Go (sounds a bit too much like fast food)
* Apple BookBook (catchy, but will make people sound like bad chicken impersonators)
When you think about it, once the word Power is off-limits, it's not so easy to think of a better name. Maybe if I was paid to do it...

What's stupid is someone who does Apple's work for them in message boards. This is a capitalist world, right? People should get paid for their work. Only fools work for free.

No offense but you are an insolent fool. You actually think someone will come up with a better name on this board and Apple will use it. Go do some marketing work and get paid for it. Your empty arguments are annoying at best on these boards. Once again, no offense.
