You mean the one that has this as its opening paragraph?

A top-of-the-line graphics card is easy to spot. It has lots of memory and a fast processor. Often, it's also more visually appealing than anything else that's intended to go inside a computer's case. Lots of high-performance video cards are illustrated or have decorative fans or heat sinks.

That was real helpful and gave me a lot of insight into how to spot a "top-of-the-line graphics card".

You understand that is why I posted the question here, no?  So you are in essence, reminding me of why I posted.  Thank you for that insight.

On a similar ignorant topic, I would like to post another question:  it was stated earlier that a normal PC card would only work in an intel Mac if there was a driver for it.  Is this different than the current state of affairs with the PowerMac G5?  Is the only thing preventing the use of an card in a PowerMac G5 the absence of a driver, or is there also a physical or other hardware reason why any old card will not work?

And that was the best site you could come up with!! lol

And yes I read the entire article, if you could call it that, and it was very lacking in even the basics. Though it did say that if all you were doing was email, word processing and the like that integrated graphics is all you need. So with that I guess my 9600 Pro is way more then I need in my iMac, thank GOD I can feel adequate again.

ROM code on the card makes em Mac or Windows.
the physical card, it's components and wiring are the same.
hardcore Mac users wanting a card that is PC only get's the ROM code for Mac, and "Flashes" the ROM using a PC. then put it in their Mac.

Who said that link was "the best I come up with"?  Because I sure as hell didn't.
Congratulations, you all win the "Mr. Presumptuous" award!

Let's go back to the original question:

czac wrote:

Is this [the X1600] a standard video card, or is the usual "low end" consumer card that so many trolls troll about.

From czac's obvious obliviousness to basically anything relating to video cards, I decided to treat him as someone who didn't know what he was talking about.
So I post an ultra dumbed down article.  Flak back.
Apparently czac is both a genius and an underinformed jackass at the same time.

All of those sites really don’t answer his question now do they? Sure they will tell you all about the X1600 but they will not tell you if the trolls, as he sees them, will still insist that it is a smurfy card. I happen to think that it is a good card for everything but the highest end gaming but I am sure there will be those around here that say it is still the worst thing since The Clap. The biggest problem I have with the site you linked to was that it did not answer his question or even give him any usable information. I mean did you even read the article yourself? It was a joke at worst. Who picks video cards by how pretty they are? Do you? I hope not because you seem to know a little about the subject of video cards. What you seem to know little about, in this case at least, is how not to be insulting to someone who asked a question you could help them with. And really, who started being Mr. Presmptuous.

is my award gold? i really have no place for another gold award.. and my wall is covered in certs and honorariums. my spare room does have room for a few more silvers tho big_smile

Re: Do we have "pro" graphics cards now?

Hell, I'm interested in this issue, too.

The Mac was invented to utilize a GUI. So, what's with that particular aspect of the implementation that is so lagging?

I'm only a lowly 'consumer' and don't depend on bigiron for $, but my best guess is that marketshare deficit has allowed for fallow code from the likes of Adobe, and lack of any gaming code.

How many sw are written w/Altivec?

How many pro sw will Mac have that use both cores?

Who cares? Dual boot into XP!

Sorry if the sites don't quantify all answers in the form of "pro" or "consumer".

Pretty much.

Yeah, I'm still chuckling about how serious everyone took that one to be.

It sounds to me that the troll-agitated tone that I took in the original post worked perfectly.

Re: Do we have "pro" graphics cards now?

we got quadros, 78GTs, X1800XTs and possibly the X1900XT when it comes out.  THe only thing one could possibly want more in terms of pro is SLI/CF.

In regards to the neew Macbook, I'm eager to see what the gamin benchmarks are with the intel chips.  The X1600, as mentioned before, is the flagship mobile card.  Serious gamer will buy a VoodooPC laptop that has actual desktop graphics cards in it or something crazy like that, but for the down-to-earth and not-dripping-with-money folk, the X1600 is pretty much as good as it gets.  Consider me rather impressed with the graphics leaps and bounds Apple has had in the past three months.

I think this link should answer everybody's questions [H]ard|OCP.  AnandTech is another good source, and there are a bunch more.  Why bother trying to understand pixel pipelines and vertex shaders when all that matters is the bottom line:  How good will my games look with x graphics card?
